Approaching Devil's Tower - Wondrous Wyoming

When we went to Devil's Tower a couple of weeks ago, I took a LOT of pictures... so it's going to take a few posts to share just the best ones with you.

Devil's Tower is a famous landmark and monument in NE Wyoming - at the edge of Wyoming's share of the Black Hills.

It is made up of igneous (volcanic) rocks, though apparently, it's not believed to have been a volcano in its own right - more along the lines of a magma plug.

(Many pictures were substantially edited on Photoscape to eliminate most of the smoke from the air.)

Read more about it from National Park Service, National Geographic, and Wikipedia.

This is the view from Hwy 24 coming back south from Hulett. I loved being able to catch part of the field in this picture.

As one approaches Devil's Tower, you are taken almost all the way around it.

Almost as exciting as the monument itself, was this colony of prairie dogs. Please do not feed them if you visit - there are very large signs all around, but apparently, people still do it. These cute little guys can carry bubonic plague, so please take the sign seriously!

Another view opposite the prairie dog colony.

A viewpoint on the western side of the monument.

Below is a prayer tree. Devil's Tower is also known as Bear Lodge (amongst other nicknames) by some of the local tribes - and is considered sacred. Each bandanna, etc, is the physical reminder of a prayer offered.

Finally, we reached the parking lot below the tower... I'll take you around it next time (or at least part way... I took that many pictures!)

Photos taken by myself in August 2021 with my Nikon D7200.
