Alcova Dam - Wondrous Wyoming

So, with an extra day off and a scheduled riot planned for Casper, we decided to skip town for the day and take the excursion that we've been planning to take the past two years - and see the dams and reservoirs that help power and water our city.

I got a little shutter-happy and took way too many pictures, so it's going to take a few posts to share the highlights...

Our first stop was Alcova Dam. Here, you can see the spillway, stained red with the iron-rich sediment that's so common in this part of the state.

This dam was completed in 1937, having cost $20 million. In addition to the power generated at the plant (below) which serves 8000 homes in the region, the dam serves to feed the irrigation canal that flows from here to Casper, 30 miles NE of here.

Perhaps in response to recent spillway collapses at other dams, this spillway is scheduled for repair beginning in October according to HydroReview.

This pretty little yellow flower appears to be Yellow Sweetclover or Melilotus officinalis. It is a nitrogen fixer, so wouldn't be a bad little flower to have in your garden.

A final pair of pictures looking down the North Platte towards Casper. The red hills are just amazing. As are the clouds that were gathering overhead...
