Two wooden sticks and those who hold them firmly in their hands are the theme of the Jazz Matinee 'Special' in October 2024. In other words, it's all about the drummers and percussionists in jazz today. Why "today"? Because the traditional drummers in jazz (from the 1930s onwards) rarely used drum sticks, preferring instead to use brushes and brooms, with which they could create a kind of ghostly sound when they stroked them gently over the drum. But whether it was yesterday or today, whether it is with brushes or sticks - improvisation and creativity are still at the forefront.
Das Motto für die Jazz-Matinee „Spezial“ im Oktober 2024 ist geprägt von zwei Holzstäben und denjenigen, die die beiden Gegenstände fest in ihren Händen halten. Es dreht sich somit alles um die Drummer und Perkussionisten im Jazz der heutigen Zeit. Warum »in der heutigen Zeit«? Weil die traditionellen Drummer im Jazz (ab den 30er-Jahren) nur selten „Drum-Sticks“ nutzten, da sie lieber zu Bürste und Besen griffen, mit denen sie eine Art Geisterklang erzeugten konnten, wenn sie sanft über die Trommel gestrichen wurden. Aber, ob gestern oder heutzutage, ob mit Besen oder den Sticks – Improvisation und Kreativität stehen nach wie vor im Vordergrund.
Sergé "Jojo" Mayer
Jojo Mayer (*18 January 1963) is a Swiss drummer. He differs from many of his colleagues in that he often incorporates electronics and AI-based compositions into his work. It is therefore no surprise that the title of his most recent album is 'ME/MACHINE'. As Jojo Mayer himself says, it was created during the pandemic, because the electronics were always there and there was no need to wear a mask.
What the critic said: *ME/MACHINE is an adventure in which human performance and the primal power of the percussion instrument interact in real time with the latest in generative music technology. Jojo Mayer is exploring new possibilities and new narratives of how man and machine can co-exist - and create - in the future.
Den Anfang macht Jojo Mayer (*18.Januar 1963), ein schweizer Drummer, der sich von vielen seiner Kollegen dadurch unterscheidet, dass er häufig die Elektronik und KI-unterstützte Kompositionen mit in seine Werke einbezieht. So verwundert es auch nicht, wenn er sein jetzt erschienenes Album „ME/MACHINE“ benannt hat. Dies, wie Jojo Mayer selbst sagt, entstand während der Zeit der Pandemie, weil die Elektronik stets präsent war und ohne Maske auskam.
Die Kritik merkt dazu an: ME/MACHINE ist ein Abenteuer, bei dem menschliche Leistung und die ursprüngliche Kraft des Schlagzeugs mit modernster generativer Musiktechnologie in Echtzeit interagieren. Jojo Mayer erforscht hierbei neue Möglichkeiten und Erzählweisen, wie Mensch und Maschine in Zukunft koexistieren – und miteinander kreativ werden können.
Yussef Dayes
Born in England on 12 December 1993, Yussef Dayes doesn't sound too far removed from Jojo Mayer when it comes to approaching Jazz. But not always, which is just as well! For his solo projects, Yussef Dayes likes to bring thoroughbred musicians into the studio with him. These include bassist Rocco Palladino, keyboarder Charlie Stacey and guitarist Tom Misch. The compositions are usually characterised by soul jazz, funk and a dash of world music. The album 'Black Classical Music' was the winner of the Ivor Novello Award for best album in May 2024, before 'Black Focus' and 'What Kinda Music'.
Der am 12. Dezember 1993 in England geborene Yussef Dayes ist von siner Herangehensweise an den Jazz nicht wirklich weit von Jojo Mayer entfernt. Aber nicht immer – und das ist auch gut so! Denn Dayes holt sich zu seinen Solo-Projekten Vollblut-Musiker mit ins Studio. Dazu gehören meist der Bassist Rocco Palladino, der Keyboarder Charlie Stacey und Tom Misch an der Gitarre.Die Kompositionen sind meist geprägt vom Soul-Jazz, Funk und eine Prise Weltmusik. Das Album „Black Classical Music“ wurde im Mai 2024 mit dem »Ivor Novello Award« als das beste Album ausgezeichnet.Zuvor erschienen bereits „Black Focus“ und „What Kinda Music“.
Trilog Gurtu
If there is anyone who can be described as a true representative of world music, then it is without a doubt Trilok Gurtu, who was born on the 30th of October 1951 in Bombay. As a percussionist, he is the intermediary par excellence between the music of India and that of the West. Although in recent years there has been an increase in his collaboration with musicians from his home country, he is still loyal to his adopted city of Hamburg. Trilok Gurtu's introduction to jazz was through collaborations with such greats as Archie Shepp, Jan Garbarek, Airto Moreira and Paul Bley. He went on to become one of the most sought-after drummers in jazz. For me, his best creative period was probably the mid-80s. That was when John McLaughlin lured him into the studio with Marcus Miller. In the meantime, the likes of Joe Zawinul, Gilberto Gil and Pat Metheny were already 'waiting in the wings'. But it was not always the case that Trilok Gurtu was part of a band. This is evidenced by 'Bad Habits' and the album 'Tabla Tarang - Melody on Drums':
Wenn jemand als ein wahrer Vertreter der Weltmusik bezeichnet werden kann, dann ist dies mit Sicherheit der am 30. Oktober 1951 in Bombay geborene Trilok Gurtu. Als Perkussionist ist er der Vermittler zwischen indischer und westlicher Musik schlechthin. Obwohl er in den letzten Jahren wieder vermehrt mit Musikern seines Heimatlandes zusammen arbeitet, bleibt er bis heute seiner Wahlheimat Hamburg treu. Zum Jazz fand Trilok Gurtu über die Zusammenarbeit mit Größen wie Archie Shepp, Jan Garbarek, Airto Moreira oder Paul Bley. Danach wurde er wohl einer der angesagtesten Perkussionisten im Bereich Jazz. Für mich gilt als seine wohl beste Schaffenszeit ab Mitte der 80-er Jahre, als John McLaughlin ihn mit Marcus Miller ins Studio lockte. In der „Warteschleife“ standen derweil bereits Joe Zawinul, Gilberto Gil und Pat Metheny. Doch war Trilok Gurtu nicht immer in eine Band eingebunden. Beweise dafür sind „Bad Habits“ und das Album „Tabla Tarang – Melody on Drums“:
Tony Allen
To this day, the late drummer Tony Allen, born in Nigeria in 1940, has been honoured by none other than African jazz and Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, who said of his colleague: "Without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat. After suffering a number of setbacks due to illness, Tony Allen made a return in 2017 with the album 'Source'. All the tracks on the album have been recordings in French studios. Saxophonist Yann Jankielewicz, trumpeter Nicolas Giraud, trombonist Daniel Zimmermann, bassist Mathias Allamane, pianist Jean-Philippe Dary and keyboardist Vincent Taurelle were involved.
Für den leider bereits verstorbenen Drummer Tony Allen, der 1940 in Nigeria geboren wurde, steht bis zum heutigen Tag eine Adelung durch niemanden geringeres als die afrikanische Jazz und Afrobeat-Legende Fela Kuti, der von seinem Musiker-Kollegen die behauptete: „Ohne Tony Allen gäbe es überhaupt keinen Afrobeat.“ Mit vielen krankheitsbedingten Rückschlägen kämpfend, meldete Tony Allen sich 2017 mit dem Album „Source“ zurück. Omar Hakim
On the 12th of February 1959, a young boy was born in New York who sat behind his first drum kit at the age of five. This little boy from the big city of America is now known as Omar Hakim. We have already got to know a friend and companion from a very early age: the bass player Marcus Miller. So let's start with the question: Who was it that David Bowie asked to play the drums for him? Who drummed for Dire Straits on 'Brothers in Arms'? The name is also inextricably linked to Joe Zawinul's "Weather Report". I think everyone can work out the answer for themselves. In the jazz world he has backed the likes of Miles Davis, John Scofield, Lee Ritenour and George Benson, to name but a few. His solo projects include "Rhythmdeep" and "Groovesmith". Both were Grammy nominated.
Am 12. Februar 1959 wurde in New York ein Junge geboren, der im Alter von fünf Jahren hinter seinem ersten Schlagzeug saß. Dieser Junge aus der amerikanischen Großmetropole ist heute bekannt unter dem Namen Omar Hakim. Ein Freund und Begleiter seit frühester Jugend haben wir bereits zuvor kennengelernt: der Bassist Marcus Miller. Simon Philips
With the second Englishman in this jazz matinee, we will first take a deep dive into the musical world of rock, pop and fusion. This is exactly where the career of Simon Phillips (6 February 1957) from London has its roots. Simon Phillips' phone number was in the hands of Jeff Beck, Peter Gabriel, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore and Judas Priest. It was only with him that they would enter the recording studio. But there was another group he was always setting the pace with - the band "Toto". It wasn't until 2014 that Phillips began to get a taste of the jazz world. This was triggered by encounters with Stanley Clarke and Lee Ritenour. This brought him into contact with bassist Ernest Tibbs, guitarist Andy Timmons and organist Steve Weingart. The result of this collaboration is the series of albums entitled 'Protocol II to Protocol IV'. This is an instrumental fusion jazz project.
Mit dem zweiten Engländer in dieser Jazz-Matinee tauchen wir zuerst tief in die musikalische Welt des Rock, Pop und Fusion ein. Denn exakt dort begann die Karriere des in London geborenen Simon Phillips (6. Februar 1957). Jeff Beck, Peter Gabriel, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore und Judas Priest – alle hatten die Telefonnummer von Simon Phillips parat. Erst dann wurde das Tonstudio betreten. Ganz nebenbei gab es da allerdings noch eine Formation, bei der er stets den Takt angab – die Band „Toto“. Es dauerte bis 2014, als Phillips am Jazz zu schnuppern begann. Auslöser waren Begegnungen mit Stanley Clarke und Lee Ritenour, die ihn in Bekanntschaft mit dem Bassisten Ernest Tibbs, dem Gitarristen Andy Timmons und dem Organisten Steve Weingart brachten. Aus dieser Zusammenarbeit stammt die Album-Serie „Protocol II bis Protocol IV“. Ein instrumentales Fusion-Jazz-Projekt.
Larnell Lewis
Finally, there is a brief trip across the Atlantic to Canada, where drummer Larnell Lewis was born on 22 March 1984 in Toronto. He has gained a worldwide reputation for his ability to keep the Snarky Puppy troupe on the beat. Lewis came to drumming in a roundabout way. He had previously studied bass and piano at Humber College. In 2004 he was the recipient of the Oscar Peterson Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music. It was only at this point that he took his place behind the drums and joined Quincy Jones on the road. Engagements with Gregory Porter, Lalah Hathaway, Lisa Fisher and Gary Burton followed. His solo album, In The Moment, which he released in 2019, was voted jazz album of the year. But he has never forgotten his time at Humber College, where he now teaches young students.
Zum Abschluss rudern wir noch kurz über den Atlantik in Richtung Kanada, wo am 22. März 1984 der Schlagzeuger Larnell Lewis in Toronto geboren wurde. Weltweite Anerkennung erhielt er durch seine Fähigkeit, die Truppe von „Snarky Puppy“ im Takt zu halten. Lewis kam erst über Umwege zum Schlagzeug, da er zuvor am „Humber College“ Bass und Klavier studierte. 2004 erhielt er den „Oscar Peterson Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music“. Erst dann nahm er Platz hinter dem Schlagzeug und stieg ein bei Quincy Jones. Danach folgten Engagements bei Gregory Porter, Lalah Hathaway, Lisa Fisher und Gary Burton. Sein Soloalbum „In The Moment“, welches er 2019 veröffentlichte, wurde zum Jazz-Album des Jahres gewählt. Seine Zeit am Humber College hat er jedoch nie vergessen und unterrichtet heute dort die jungen Studenten.
