It all began in 1996 when music students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison formed Phat Phunktion. Fusing soul, groove, funk and jazz, the nine-member band tried their hand at music. It wasn't long before they established themselves as one of the most sought-after live bands in the Midwest.
Alles begann 1996, als Studierende aus dem Fach Musik, an der Universität von Wisconsin-Madison, die Formation Phat Phunktion gründeten. Die neun Mitglieder umfassende Band versuchte sich in der musikalischen Vereinigung von Soul, Groove, Funk und Jazz. Es dauerte nicht lange, und sie etablierten sich im Mittleren Westen, als eine der gefragtesten Live-Bands.
From 2003, when they were named the most up-and-coming band of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, it was all uphill. Awards at both regional and national level followed, along with appearances in the media and on the hottest stages of that time.
Ab 2003, als sie vom Musikmagazin “Rolling Stone” als die aufstrebenste Band überhaupt bezeichnet wurden, ging es dann nur noch steil bergauf. Es folgten Auszeichnungen, regional sowie landesweit, Auftritte in den Medien und auf den angesagtesten Bühnen jener Zeit.
Up until 2004, the band produced all its records themselves. It was only then that Ben and Leo Sidran, with the help of their label Nardis/Liquid8, were able to secure international distribution for the band. In 2005 the album "You and Me" was awarded album of the year.
Bis ins Jahr 2004 produzierte die Band all ihre Alben aus eigener Tasche. Erst dann stiegen Ben und Leo Sidran mit ihrem Label Nardis/Liquid8 ein und ermöglichten einen internationalen Vertrieb. 2005 wurde das Album “You and Me” zum Album des Jahres ausgezeichnet.
Jazz Times magazine reviewed the album as follows:
"Phat Phunktion has a brass-driven sound inspired by 70s funk, and on 'You and Me', the band's first release on a national label, producers Tim Whalen and Al Falaschi prove their talent for crafting strong, danceable tracks..... Musically, the album is top notch."
Das Magazin “Jazz Times” bewertete das Album so:
"Phat Phunktion hat einen bläserbetonten Sound, der vom Funk der 70er Jahre inspiriert ist, und auf 'You and Me', der ersten Veröffentlichung der Band bei einem nationalen Label, beweisen die Produzenten Tim Whalen und Al Falaschi ihr Talent für die Gestaltung starker, tanzbarer Tracks.... Musikalisch ist das Album erstklassig."
They went on to tour worldwide, celebrating their success with a sound that was dubbed 'new tower of power' by industry press. They had finally arrived in the world league of blues-jazz-funk.
Die Band tourte durch alle Kontinente und feierte Erfolge mit einem Sound, den die Fachpresse als den “Neuen Tower of Power” bezeichnete. Damit waren sie dann endgültig angelangt, in der Weltliga des Blues-Jazz-Funk.
Even after this success, Phat Phunktion did not stop in their musical development, which seems to be proven with every new album released. In 2016 they celebrated their 20th stage anniversary and in 2017 they released a live album "Phat Phunktion Live at the High Noon". At the moment the band is busy with studio recordings and rarely appears on stage.
Phat Phunktion blieben auch nach diesem Erfolg in ihrer musikalischen Entwicklung nicht stehen, was mit jedem neu erschienen Album belegt zu sein scheint. 2016 feierten sie ihr 20-jähriges Bühnenjubiläum und schoben 2017 das Live-Album "Phat Phunktion Live at the High Noon" nach. Momentan ist die Band mit Studio-Aufnahmen beschäftigt und tritt auf der Bühne nur noch selten in Erscheinung.
