Music and poetry, a captivating combination!
The musical activity of the Souljazz Orchestra began with the leap into the new millennium. From the very beginning, the formation explored almost all aspects of jazz. Therefore, it is not easy to characterise their specific sound. Sometimes an explosive clash of soul, jazz with tropical elements or completely classical and always carried by the excellent brass section, the almost nostalgic sound of the keyboard and a large assortment of percussion instruments.
Mit dem Sprung ins neue Jahrtausend begann das musikalische Wirken des Souljazz Orchestras. Von Anfang an tastete sich die Formation an nahezu alle Bereiche des Jazz. Daher gestaltet es sich nicht ganz einfach, ihren spezifischen Sound zu charakterisieren. Mal ein explosiver Zusammenprall von Soul, Jazz mit tropischen Elementen oder ganz klassisch und immer getragen von den hervorragenden Bläsern, dem beinahe bereits nostalgischem Klang des Keyboards und einem ganzen Arsenal von Perkussion.
In these already troubled times, the Canadians present their new album Chaos Theories, which completely justifies its name, both with regard to the musical messages and the content. The collective Souljazz Orchestra, already known for its uncompromising social and political messages in previous years, now seems more provocative than ever. Hypocrisy in the headquarters of political power, abuse of the democratic mandate, corrupt law enforcement and the disempowerment of the working class. All this is relentlessly denounced.
In diesen sowieso schon turbulenten Zeiten, stellen die Kanadier ihr neues Album Chaos Theories vor, das, von den musikalischen sowie innhaltlichen Botschaften, vollends seinem Namen gerecht wird. Das Kollektiv Souljazz Orchestra, bereits in den Jahren zuvor bekannt für das Einbringen kompromissloser sozialer und politischer Botschaften, wirkt nun provokanter als je zuvor. Heuchelei in den Zentralen der Macht, Missbrauch des politischen Mandats, koruppte Strafverfolger und die Machtlosigkeit des Arbeiters. All das wird schonungslos angeprangert.
Also musically, the incorporation of other musical styles continued. Suddenly, also raggae finds its way into Canadian jazz. Pierre Chrétien, one of the composers, says: "We have been playing with the idea of creating our own Afro-punk. Something with the wild, outspoken energy of punk rock or free jazz, but with the soulful, hypnotic grooves of tropical music".
Auch musikalisch ging das Einbeziehen anderer Musikrichtungen weiter. Urplötzlich findet auch der Raggae seinen Weg in den kanadischen Jazz. Pierre Chrétien, einer der Komponisten sagt dazu: “Wir haben mit der Idee gespielt, unseren eigenen Afro-Punk zu kreieren. Etwas mit der wilden, unverblümten Energie von Punkrock oder Free Jazz, aber mit den gefühlvollen, hypnotischen Grooves der tropischen Musik".
With nine albums already released, it is almost impossible to do the work of the members of Souljazz Orchestra justice with the Jazz Matinee.
