Somi Kakoma has been described by “JazzTimes” magazine as the earthy grit of Nina Simone mixed with the vocal beauty of Dianne Reeves — all of it of enchanting elegance and simply enchanting. The jazz experts are not far wrong with this judgement. But could someone please explain to me what the hell this earthy courage is supposed to be all about?
Born in Illinois to parents who emigrated from Rwanda and Uganda, Reeves is a singer, composer, and writer. She discovered her musical identity by crossing the cultural bridge between America and Africa.

Die in Illinois geborene Sängerin, Komponistin und Schriftstellerin, deren Eltern aus Ruanda und Uganda eingewandert sind, entdeckte ihre musikalische Identität beim Überqueren der kulturellen Brücke zwischen Amerika und Afrika.
This mixture of 'western' jazz and African rhythms is still a feature of Somi's compositions to this day. A couple of years ago she went into seclusion in Lagos, Nigeria, for the completion of her album 'The Lagos Music Salon'. But this was not to be the only point of contact with her ancestral homeland. In the year 2022, Ms Kakoma took a bow with 'Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba', she paid tribute to the African legend herself, who was forced to spend 31 years in exile for fighting against Apartheid.
Diese Mischung aus „westlichem“ Jazz und afrikanischen Rhythmen prägen bis heute die Kompositionen von Somi, die sich vor ein paar Jahren für eine Zeit nach Lagos/Nigeria zurückzog, um dort ihr Album "The Lagos Music Salon" fertigzustellen. Doch sollte dies nicht der einzige Berührungspunkt mit der Heimat ihrer Vorfahren bleiben. 2022 verneigt sich Frau Kakoma mit "Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba" vor der afrikanischen Musiklegende überhaupt, die wegen ihres Kampfes gegen die Apartheit 31 Jahre im Exil verbringen musste.
Somi Kakoma explains her motivations in the following way: What is required and expected of me in a studio album and in a play are extremely diverse and very specific. I am very proud of both projects and the opportunity to pay tribute to a woman who had the courage to confront people's expectations of an African woman and to re-imagine how we should appear in the world. Creating Zenzile has helped me in many ways. As an artist and as an African woman — especially in these extraordinary times when the courage to tell our stories is paramount!
Somi Kakoma erklärt ihre Beweggründe wie folgt: „Was von mir bei einem Studioalbum oder bei einem Theaterstück abverlangt und erwartet wird, ist äußerst unterschiedlich und sehr spezifisch. Ich bin sehr stolz auf beide Projekte und die Gelegenheit, einer Frau Respekt zu zollen, die den Mut hatte, den Erwartungen der Menschen an eine afrikanische Frau entgegenzugehen und sich neu vorzustellen, wie wir in der Welt erscheinen sollen. Die Entstehung von Zenzile hat mir in vielerlei Hinsicht geholfen. Als Künstlerin und als afrikanische Frau – besonders in diesen außergewöhnlichen Zeiten, in denen der Mut, unsere Geschichten zu erzählen, von größter Bedeutung ist!“
What sounds like another musical excursion to the African continent turns out to be a tribute to the New York neighbourhood known as Little Africa or Petite Afrique. It is the part of Harlem that stretches from 116th Street via Malcolm X Boulevard to Frederick Douglass Boulevard, which has become something of a Mecca for the African diaspora. So in 2017, it was only natural that the name of her album was in reference to this neighbourhood: 'Petite Afrique'.
This is how her record label, Sony Music, categorises the work: The album is a contemporary song cycle about the dignity of immigrants in the United States. Somi, who is both an anthropologist and a writer, celebrates both the black experience of Harlem and the slow erasure of the vibrant African immigrant population from the historic neighbourhood through gentrification.
Was wie ein weiterer musikalischer Ausflug auf den afrikanischen Kontinent klingen mag, ist entpuppt sich allerdings als eine Hommage an den Stadtteil New Yorks, der auch Little Africa oder auch Petite Afrique genannt wird. Es ist der Teil in Harlem, der sich von der 116. Straße über den Malcolm X Boulevard bis zum Frederick Douglass Boulevard hinzieht, der sich zu einer Art Mekka der afrikanischen Diaspora entwickelt hat. So lag es 2017 dann auch auf der Hand, ihr Album nach diesem Stadtteil zu benennen: ”Petite Afrique”.
Ihr Plattenlabel Sony Music ordnet das Werk so ein: Das Album ist ein zeitgemäßer Liederzyklus über die Würde von Immigranten in den Vereinigten Staaten. Somi, gleichermaßen Anthropologin und Schriftstellerin, feiert in seinen Liedern sowohl die schwarze Erfahrung Harlems als auch die langsame Auslöschung der pulsierenden afrikanischen Einwandererbevölkerung aus der historischen Nachbarschaft durch die Gentrifizierung.
Laura Kabasomi Kakoma (this is the real name of the artist, who was born in 1979 in Champaign, Illinois) is also the founder of Salon Africana, an art and publishing boutique that presents the best of contemporary African performance, visual and literary arts to a wide public. I would also like to recommend the album 'Holy Room — Live at Alte Oper with Frankfurt Radio Big Band', which eventually earned her a nomination for a Grammy in the category of Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2021. With this nomination, Somi became the first African woman ever to be nominated in one of the jazz categories of the Grammy Awards.
Laura Kabasomi Kakoma (so lautet übrigens der wahre Name der 1979 in Champaign/Illinois geborenen Künstlerin) ist auch die Gründerin des Salon Africana, einer Kunst- und Produktionsboutique, die das Beste zeitgenössischer afrikanischer Künstler aus den Bereichen Performance, visuelle und literarische Kunst einem breiten Publikum vorstellt. Für unbedingt empfehlenswert halte ich auch das Album ”Holy Room – Live at Alte Oper with Frankfurt Radio Big Band”, welches ihr schließlich 2021 eine Grammy-Nominierung in der Kategorie Best Jazz Vocal Album einbrachte. Mit dieser Nominierung wurde Somi die erste Afrikanerin, die jemals in einer der Grammy-Jazzkategorien nominiert wurde.
This is an entry in Somi's biography that should not go completely unmentioned: Celebrated for her activism, the artist was asked by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to perform at the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. She was also invited to perform at Carnegie Hall alongside Hugh Masekela, Dave Matthews and Vusi Mahlesela to celebrate South African democracy. In 2018, she is still an East African Midwestern girl at heart, who loves her family, poetry, and freedom.
Nicht vollkommen unerwähnt in Somis Biografie sollte dieser Eintrag sein: Die für ihren Aktivismus gefeierte Künstlerin wurde von Generalsekretär Ban Ki-Moon gebeten, in der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen anlässlich des Internationalen Tages des Gedenkens an die Opfer der Sklaverei und des transatlantischen Sklavenhandels aufzutreten. Außerdem wurde sie eingeladen, in der Carnegie Hall neben Hugh Masekela, Dave Matthews und Vusi Mahlesela zur Feier der südafrikanischen Demokratie aufzutreten. Im Jahr 2018 ist sie im Herzen ein ostafrikanisches Mädchen aus dem Mittleren Westen, das Familie, Poesie und Freiheit liebt.
