What is the essential difference between the critical approach or even the interpretation of jazz as it is practised in France and that which is often determined by fixed structures in many other countries? It is probably the typical casualness of the "Gauls" or (as they are typically called in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) "La Grande Nation", which is attributed to it. This most likely explains why, in the jazz world, the likes of ZAZ, Camille and Joe Bel can be found alongside Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, Vincent Peirani, Jean-Luc Ponty and Michel Petrucciani. The idea of inviting Joe Bel to the stage seemed like an excellent one.
Was unterscheidet im Wesentlichen die kritische Herangehensweise oder gar die Interpretation des Jazz, wie in Frankreich praktiziert, von der oft von festen Strukturen bestimmten, in vielen anderen Ländern? Es ist wohl die typische Nonchalance der “Gallier” oder (wie immer wieder in den D-A-CH – Staaten bezeichnete) “La Grande Nation”, die ihnen zugesprochen wird. Nur so lässt es sich wohl erklären, weshalb es neben Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, Vincent Peirani, Jean-Luc Ponty oder Michel Petrucciani, es auch ZAZ, Camille oder Joe Bel im Kreis der Jazzer anerkannt werden. Eine wahrlich gute Idee somit, die letztgenannte Künstlerin auf die Bühne der Jazz-Matinee zu bitten.

With the new album 'Family Tree', Joe Bel presents the follow-up to her first album 'Dreams', released in 2018. The 11 songs that have made it onto the black vinyl disc combine two elements that are very typical of this artist - the velvety quality of her voice and the constant attention she pays to musical harmony. This is the way it should be done in a family, if you want the family tree to develop in the best possible way.
In ihrem Heimatland ist der heutige Gast auch gleichsam bekannt als Schauspielerin oder vom Laufsteg der Modewelt. Mit dem jetzt vorgestellten Album „Family Tree” präsentiert Joe Bel den Nachfolger ihres Erstlings „Dreams” aus dem Jahr 2018. Die 11 Songs, die es auf die schwarze Vinylscheibe geschafft haben, verbinden zwei ganz typische Elemente für diese Künstlerin – die samtige Stimme und der stete Bedacht auf eine musikalische Harmonie. Eben exakt so, wie es in einer Familie gehandhabt werden sollte, wenn erwartet wird, dass der Stammbaum sich bestens entwickelt.
Born in France on 26 July 1988, she spent much of her youth sailing the world's oceans. Her parents (of Turkish-Greek descent) were convinced that it would be better for their daughter (before she got caught up in the school system) to discover more of the world. Musically, she laid a solid foundation with her training on the piano. It wasn't until much later in life that she picked up an acoustic guitar. Not a bad decision, if you consider that it was the traditional Jewish-Spanish songs that she was particularly fond of singing. But it wasn't until 2012 that she played the guitar for the first time in front of an audience, and it was folk-rock musician Asaf Avidan who accompanied Joe Bel on his European tour.
Am 26. Juli 1988 in Frankreich geboren, verbrachte sie allerdings einen Großteil ihrer Jugend auf den Meeren dieses Planeten, da ihre Eltern (türkisch-griechischer Herkunft) der festen Überzeugung waren, es sei besser für die Tochter (bevor sie in den Fängen des Schulsystems landet), mehr von der Welt zu erkunden. Musikalisch erschuf sie ein stabiles Fundament mit einer Ausbildung am Klavier. Erst viel später kam dann die Akustikgitarre dazu. Keine schlechte Entscheidung, wenn man berücksichtigt, dass es die traditionellen jüdisch-spanischen Lieder waren, die sie insbesondere bevorzugte. Es dauerte allerdings bis 2012, als sie erstmals mit der Gitarre vor Publikum auf einer Bühne stand.Der Folk-Rock Musiker Asaf Avidan war es dann, der Joe Bel mit auf seine Europatournee nahm.
With the release of the EP "Hit the Roads" (2015), Joe Bel's music also found its way to radio stations and other media. The song of the same name accompanied the advertising campaign of Longchamp and its chief designer Alexa Chung. The campaign was directed by star photographer Peter Lindbergh. The organisers of the Sziget Festival in Budapest couldn't resist the opportunity to present the rising star on their stage and launch her career, and the album "Dreams" was a perfect fit for the critics. The reward for all the hard work: 50 million streams.
Mit der EP „Hit the Roads” (2015) fand die Musik von Joe Bel dann auch Resonanz bei den Radiosendern und anderen Medien. Der gleichnamige Titelsong unterlegte die Werbekampagne von Longchamp und deren Chefdesignerin Alexa Chung.Die Regie führte Starfotograf Peter Lindbergh. Die Organisatoren des „Sziget-Festivals“ in Budapest ließen es sich nicht entgehen, den gerade aufgehenden Stern auf ihrer Bühne vorzustellen. Somit die Karriere auf Touren gebracht, kam das Album „Dreams” für die Kritik wie gerufen. Der Lohn der Arbeit: 50 Millionen Streams.
In 2020, when Joe Bel was on the verge of giving birth to her second child, she began composing for “Family Tree”. In terms of language, she moves back and forth between French, English and Ladino - the Spanish dialect of her grandfather. Her husband, Julien Jussey, acted as producer and musical accompanist on the piano. The 11 songs were recorded at the Ciergerie Studio in Lyon, France.
There is one sentence in the feature article that I found so apt that I would like to take it over: "This is a completely harmonious album, marked by family ties and sonic diversity. It is a successful interplay of melancholy and sunshine, strength and tenderness".
2020, Joe Bel erwartete gerade ihr zweites Kind, begann sie mit den Kompositionen für “Family Tree”. Sprachlich wandert sie dabei zwischen dem Französischen, Englischen und Ladino - dem spanischen Dialekt ihres Großvaters. Als Produzent und musikalischer Begleiter am Klavier fungierte ihr Ehemann Julien Jussey. Aufgenommen wurden die 11 Songs im Ciergerie Studio in Lyon.
Ein Satz im Feuilleton fand ich so treffend, dass ich ihn liebend gerne übernehme: »Dies ist ein rundum harmonisches Album, das sich durch familiäre Verbundenheit und klangliche Vielfalt auszeichnet und ein gelungenes Wechselspiel von Melancholie und Sonnenschein, Kraft und Sanftheit darstellt«
