Eine Stimme, die man so schnell nicht mehr vergisst.
Geht es um Lady Blackbird, muss ich mich viel auf das verlassen, was ihr Produzent Chris Seefried über seinen Schützling preisgibt. Die Lady gibt nur spärliche Informationen über sich selbst frei – oder hüllt sich gleich ganz in Schweigen.
Bekannt und unbestritten ist jedenfalls der Fakt, dass sie im Südwesten der USA als Marley Munroe geboren und ihr bereits mit sechzehn ein Plattenvertrag angeboten wurde, um christliche Musik aufzunehmen.
When it concerns Lady Blackbird, I have to rely a lot on what her producer Chris Seefried reveals about his protégé. The lady herself gives only scanty information about herself - or is completely silent.
What is known and undisputed is the fact that she was born as Marley Munroe in the south-west of the USA and was offered a record contract at the age of sixteen to record Christian music.
Eine wahrhaftige Begeisterung für dieses Spektrum der Musik brachte die junge Dame jedoch nicht auf. Viel lieber packte sie mit achtzehn ihre Koffer und machte sich auf nach New York, wo sie sich in den verschiedensten Musikrichtungen ausprobierte.
Ein enger Freund jener Tage sagte: „Was aber da schon auffiel, war diese volle, warme, zauberhafte Stimme, die nur noch an den richtigen Produzenten geraten musste“. Und hier kommt jener Chris Seefried ins Spiel.
However, the young lady did not develop a true enthusiasm for this spectrum of music. She preferred to packing her bags at the age of eighteen and set off for New York, where she experimented with a wide variety of musical styles.
A close friend from those days said: „But what already stood out was this full, warm, enchanting voice that just had to find the right producer“. And this is where Chris Seefried enters the scene.
Seefried, der unter anderem auch Andra Day produzierte, verständigte sich wohl mit Lady Blackbird, vonseiten der Produktion den Aufwand möglichst auf ein Minimum zu reduzieren, um diese markante Stimme uneingeschränkt in den Vordergrund zu rücken.
So kommt die Lady mit einer Begleitband aus, die lediglich aus einem Keyboarder und einem Bassisten besteht. Nur gelegentlich stoßen dann noch ein Drummer und ein paar Streicher hinzu.
Seefried, who also produced Andra Day among others, probably agreed with Lady Blackbird to reduce the production effort as much as possible to a minimum in order to put this distinctive voice fully in the focus.
So the Lady gets by with an accompanying band consisting only of a keyboard player and a bassist. Only occasionally does a drummer and a few strings join in.
Kommentiert wird das Ergebnis dann so: „Aber viele Stücke wirken fast wie hingetupft. Manchmal fast skizzenhaft oder nicht bis zum Ende durch produziert. Aber genau das ist großartig. Da atmet diese Musik und da strahlt diese Stimme.“
Am Klavier sitzt übrigens Deron Johnson, der mit Miles Davis (bis zu dessen Tod 1991) auf Tour war. Über Johnson wird gesagt, er sei ein Pianist, der alles beherrscht, jedoch sehr genau weiß, wann es sich einzuschränken gilt.
The result is commented as follows: „But many pieces almost seem to be dabbed on. Sometimes almost sketchy or not produced through all the way to the end. But that's exactly what's brilliant. That's where this music breathes and that's where this voice is shining.“
On piano, by the way, is Deron Johnson, who toured with Miles Davis (until his death in 1991). It is said about Johnson that he is a pianist who masters everything, but knows very well when to limit himself.
Mit Black Acid Soul legt Lady Blackbird nun ein Album vor, welches ohne Einschränkung als das Debut-Album des Jahres bezeichnet werden kann. Alte, bekannte Soul- und Folk-Songs in einer spannenden Jazz-Interpretation.

With Black Acid Soul, Lady Blackbird now presents an album that can be described without reservation as the debut album of the year. Old, well-known soul and folk songs in an exciting jazz interpretation.
