Paul Joseph Peterson, born in Minneapolis in 1964, descends from a musical family, is married, has two children (with his daughter Taylor following in her father's footsteps) and still lives near his hometown.
Who or what does one automatically associate with this Minnesota? Prince, of course! And it was precisely this multi-talented musician who took notice of Peterson and hired him as a keyboardist in an R&B band called The Time.
Paul Joseph Peterson, geboren 1964 in Minneapolis, entstammt einer Musikerfamilie, ist verheiratet, hat zwei Kinder (wobei seine Tochter Taylor in die Fußstapfen des Vaters getreten ist) und lebt noch immer in der Nähe seiner Heimatstadt.
Wen oder was verbindet man automatisch mit dieser Stadt in Minnesota? Natürlich Prince! Und genau jenes Multitalent war es, der auf Peterson aufmerksam wurde und ihn als Keyboarder in der R&B-Band The Time einsetzte.
However, he first gained real fame through his appearance in the film Purple Rain. The Time was followed by The Family, which also only lasted a short time. Peterson probably had enough of the constant changes Prince involved him in and started a solo project, to which he lent his last name. The two singles Intimacy and Rich Man were also taken from that album. Two more albums followed, which he released on Atlantic Records. Everything, his last solo album, was released in 2003.
So richtige Bekanntheit erlangte er jedoch erst durch seinen Auftritt im Film Purple Rain. Auf The Time folgte The Family, welche jedoch auch nur kurze Zeit zusammenhielt. Wahrscheinlich hatte Peterson genug von den ständigen Veränderungen, in die Prince ihn einbezog und startete ein Solo-Projekt, dem er seinen Nachnamen verlieh. Aus jenem Album stammen auch die beiden Auskopplungen Intimacy und Rich Man. Danach folgten noch zwei Alben, die er bei Atlantic Records veröffentlichte. Everything, sein letztes Soloalbum, stammt aus dem Jahr 2003.
Besides his projects, Peterson was always a highly sought-after studio and session musician. To mention just a few names: Steve Miller, Kenny Loggins, Oleta Adams or Peter Frampton. He contributed film scores and was responsible for programmes and recordings at the Minnesota Media Institute. A longer collaboration developed with Oleta Adams, for which he not only produced but also recorded tracks.
Neben seinen eigenen Projekten war Peterson stets ein viel gefragter Studio- und Session-Musiker. Um nur einige Namen zu nennen: Steve Miller, Kenny Loggins, Oleta Adams oder Peter Frampton. Er steuerte Filmmusiken bei und war am Minnesota Media Institute für die Programme und Aufnahmen zuständig. Eine längere Zusammenarbeit entwickelte sich mit Oleta Adams, für die er nicht nur produzierte, sondern auch Alben einspielte.
In 2011, some members of the once split-up band The Family got back together and formed fDeluxe. The album Gaslight was released the same year.
Calling himself St. Paul meanwhile, Peterson constituted St. Paul and The Minneapolis Funk All Stars in 2017. A tour of Australia followed before they returned to the States, where they performed at many festivals, including the Thunder Bay Blues Festival.
The album You Got 2 Love was released in 2018.
2011 fanden sich einige Mitglieder der einst aufgelösten Band The Family wieder zusammen und gründeten fDeluxe. Im selben Jahr wurde das Album Gaslight veröffentlicht.
Sich inzwischen St. Paul nennend, formte Peterson 2017 die St. Paul and The Minneapolis Funk All Stars. Es folgte eine Tour durch Australien, bevor es zurück in die Staaten ging, wo die Formation auf vielen Festivals auftrat – unter anderem dem Thunder Bay Blues Festival.
2018 folgte noch das Album You Got 2 Love.
