When it comes to Afra Kane and her album “Could We Be Whole”, it seems as if the experts on the feature pages are of one mind: “Music in which the sun is always shining, even when the artfully composed melodies dissolve into free impressions and the lyrics are thought-provoking, it is always cheerful, even colourful. When asked about her newly released single “Death In My Dreams”, the artist, who seems to have found her home in Switzerland, said: “The title is quite self-explanatory. It is a reference to a time last summer when I had dreams of death for ten days in a row. I don't know where these dreams of dying come from, but I've read that they often happen when you're trying to start a new chapter in your life. In order to be ready for something new, you have to leave parts of yourself behind.”
Angesprochen auf ihre nun ausgekoppelte Single “Death In My Dreams” sagt die Künstlerin, die ihre Heimat in der Schweiz gefunden zu haben scheint: »Der Titel ist ziemlich selbsterklärend. Er bezieht sich auf eine Zeit im letzten Sommer, als ich zehn Tage hintereinander vom Tod träumte. Ich weiß nicht, woher diese Todesträume kommen, aber ich habe gelesen, dass sie oft auftreten, wenn man ein neues Kapitel im Leben aufschlägt. Man muss sozusagen Teile von sich zurücklassen, um für Neues bereit zu sein.«
Afra Kane was born in Vicenza in the north of Italy. Her parents were born in Nigeria, from where they had emigrated to Europe. She learned to play the piano at an early age. She later studied at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff (Wales) and at the Haute École de Musique de Genève in Neuchâtel (Switzerland). Furthermore, she then went on to try her luck as a singer/songwriter. As she began to incorporate more and more elements of jazz into her compositions, the jazz community in Montreux began to take notice of the young talent. It didn't take long for the jury to award her the “Jazz Talent Award”.
Afra Kane wurde in Vicenza (Nord-Italien) geboren. Ihre Eltern stammen aus Nigeria, von wo nach Europa auswanderten. Sie erlernte bereits früh das Klavierspiel und absolvierte später dann das “Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama” in Cardiff (Wales) und die “Haute École de Musique de Genève” in Neuchâtel (Schweiz). Danach versuchte sie sich als Singer/Songwriterin. Da sie immer öfter Elemente aus dem Jazz in ihre Kompositionen einbaute, wurde die um Montreux angesiedelte Jazz-Gemeinde auf das junge Talent aufmerksam. Es dauerte nicht lange und sie wurde von der Jury mit dem “Jazz Talent Award” ausgezeichnet.

With “Could We Be Whole”, the artist is taking a further step towards a global career. The album was co-produced by Afra Kane and Christophe Farine. Christophe Farine has been her creative partner for several years. It's the musical versatility that makes this so exciting to listen to and work with. Excellent arrangements paired with this voice that is almost seductive.

„Could We Be Whole“ einen weiteren Schritt in Richtung Weltkarriere. Das Album entstand als Gemeinschaftsproduktion von Afra Kane und Christophe Farine, der als kreativer Partner bereits seit mehreren Jahren an ihrer Seite steht. Es ist die musikalische Wandlungsfähigkeit, die das Werk so spannend macht. Hervorragende Arrangements, gepaart mit dieser beinahe schon verführerischen Stimme.
To conclude, once again, from the artist herself: “You could say in French that the album is very “brut”. It is almost like a diamond in the rough. I think most people will actually be surprised by how raw and unpolished it is. Especially as it gets rougher and rougher. It has things that sound nightmarish in places. And then there are things that are more like balm for the soul. I always try to find a balance in my music — on the one hand, it shouldn't be too difficult to digest, but on the other hand, I want to get out of my comfort zone. It's a learning process, both for me as an artist and for the listener.”
Zum Abschluss noch einmal die Künstlerin selbst: »Auf Französisch würde man sagen, dass das Album sehr ‚brut‘ ist. Fast wie ein ungeschliffener Diamant. Ich glaube, die meisten Leute werden tatsächlich überrascht sein, wie roh und ungeschliffen es ist. Vor allem, weil es immer mehr Ecken und Kanten bekommt. Es gibt Sachen, die teilweise albtraumhaft klingen. Und dann gibt es Sachen, die eher Balsam für die Seele sind. Ich versuche immer, eine Balance in meiner Musik zu finden - einerseits soll sie nicht zu schwer verdaulich sein, andererseits will ich mich aus meiner Komfortzone herausbewegen. Es ist ein Lernprozess, für mich als Künstlerin ebenso wie für die Hörer.«
