Ohne die Jugend ist es um die Zukunft schlecht bestellt.
It is exactly the same in the music business as it is in all other aspects of life. You can organise your own existence to the best of your ability. But when it comes to the future, each of us is dependent on the generations that follow us. They, in turn, benefit from the knowledge that we (the older generation) pass on to them, and are then amazed to see what young people do with what we were convinced was already an achievement that could hardly be surpassed. To illustrate this point, today's jazz-matinée is all about young people and old people working together.
Es verhält sich in der Musik exakt gleich wie in allen anderen Bereichen des Lebens. Du kannst dein eigenes Dasein dir nach bestem Wissen gestalten – doch wenn es um die Zukunft geht, ist ein Jeder von uns auf die Generationen angewiesen, die nach uns kommen. Die wiederum profitieren von dem Wissen, was wir (die Älteren) ihnen an angesammeltem Wissen vermitteln und dürfen dann erstaunt miterleben, was die Jugend aus dem gestaltet, von dem wir überzeugt waren, bereits kaum zu Übertreffendes geleistet zu haben. Um dies zu veranschaulichen, steht die heutige Jazz-Matinee ganz im Zeichen der Zusammenarbeit von Jung und Alt.
Before we turn our attention to the "instructors", let's focus on the "trainees". The Youthsayers are a group that was founded in 2016 in the south of the English capital with the aim of inspiring young people to take up the work of musical ensembles. They put into practice what they've been taught about playing in a group, and at the same time, with the confidence they've acquired, they bring the skills needed to work in a group: Leadership.
Bevor wir uns den „Lehrmeistern“ zuwenden, richtet sich unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf die „Auszubildenden“. Youthsayers sind eine Formation, die im Süden der englischen Hauptstadt 2016 gegründet wurde und sich zum Ziel setzte, die Jugend für die musikalische Ensemblearbeit zu begeistern. Sie setzen das um, was ihnen an Gruppenspiel beigebracht wurde und bringen gleichzeitig mit dem erworbenen Selbstvertrauen die Fähigkeit mit, die es in der Gruppenarbeit einer Band benötigt: Führungsqualität.
And the ability to lead a band musically and to give it a distinctive style is not something that happens naturally to everyone. It takes a lot of practising and having a positive attitude to be able to master this at all. It is at this point that the "old masters" take over the direction - in a personal union with the Soothsayers. In this case it is a band that also has its home in London and is mainly devoted to jazz, funk, reggae and afrobeat.
Und das Können, eine Formation auch musikalisch zu leiten und ihr damit mitunter einen prägnanten Stil zu verleihen, fällt niemandem einfach so zu. Hier bedarf es vieler Praktika, eine positive Einstellung auf das Leben ohnehin, um dieses überhaupt meistern zu können. An diesem Punkt übernehmen dann die „alten Meister“ die Regie - und zwar in Personalunion von den Soothsayers. Hier handelt es sich um eine Band, die ebenfalls in London ansässig ist und sich vornehmlich dem Jazz, Funk, Reggae und Afrobeat verschrieben hat.
It is their aim to support the young people with whom they work in their development and to help them to maintain a positive attitude to overcome the challenges of life. Youthsayers offers work experience opportunities. This helps young people develop employability skills.
Weekly seminars are also held which include the learning of new music, improvisation, formation playing, performance skills and many other facets of musicianship and teamwork. Two different bands are formed at any one time. These are different in terms of age and previous experience. To show what they have learnt, they perform regularly at different venues and festivals.
Ihr Ziel ist es, die jungen Menschen, mit denen sie arbeiten, in ihrer Entwicklung zu unterstützen und ihnen zu helfen, eine positive Einstellung zu bewahren, um die Herausforderungen des Lebens zu meistern. Youthsayers bietet Möglichkeiten für Praktika, die die Beschäftigungsfähigkeit junger Menschen fördern.
In wöchentlich stattfindenden Seminaren, die unter anderem das Erlernen neuer Musik, das Erlernen von Improvisation, das Formationsspiel umfassen, werden auch die Auftrittsfähigkeiten und viele andere Facetten von Musikalität und Teamwork eingeübt. Dabei werden stets zwei unterschiedliche Bands formiert. Diese unterscheiden sich in Alter und der bereits gemachten Erfahrungen. Um das Erlernte zu präsentieren, treten sie regelmäßig an verschiedenen Orten und bei Festivals auf.
Anyone aged between 8 and 18 is welcome to take part in this free music scheme. A special welcome is given to all those children who come from social classes in which the teaching of an instrument is and will remain an economic impossibility. Therefore, to prevent what unfortunately happens all too often, great importance is attached to ensuring that parents are always involved in the programme: "Music is just a waste of time. You'd be better off going to work so that there can be more money in the family budget at last".
Beim kostenlosen Zugang zur Musik sind alle zwischen 8 und 18 herzlichst eingeladen. Insbesondere willkommen sind all jene Kinder, die aus sozialen Schichten kommen, wo ein Unterrichten an einem Instrument wirtschaftlich ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit ist und bleibt. Daher wird dann auch größten Wert darauf gelegt, dass die Eltern stets in das Programm eingeweiht werden, um dem vorzubeugen, was leider viel zu oft geschieht: »Musik ist doch vergeudete Zeit. Geh’ lieber etwas arbeiten, damit endlich mehr Geld in die Haushaltskasse fließt.«
