It happens quite often that you are confronted with a portrait that makes the cogs in the back of your mind start to turn, and you quickly get the feeling that there is something very specific about it: I know that face from somewhere. Many people will have the same feeling today, because the musician who is about to take the stage at the jazz matinee is more likely to be on the stage of a theatre or on the big screen. This is a perfectly understandable assumption - but it is only part of the whole picture. Damian Lewis isn't just picking up the script for his next film. He's also picking up the guitar.
Es passiert recht häufig, dass man mit einem Konterfei konfrontiert wird, bei dessen Anblick die Rädchen im Hinterkopf zu rotieren beginnen und sich rasch in einer spezifischen Sache Sicherheit einstellt: Das Gesicht kenne ich von irgendwo her. Vielen wird es auch heute so ergehen, da der Musiker, der jetzt die Bühne der Jazz-Matinee betritt, eher auf der Theaterbühne oder auf der Leinwand vermutet wird. Eine durchaus nachvollziehbare Vermutung – aber eben nur ein Teil vom Ganzen. Denn Damian Lewis greift nicht ausschließlich zum Drehbuch für den nächsten Film, sondern auch zur Gitarre.
Born on the 11th of February 1971 in London, UK, Damian Lewis was not interested in the dramas written by William Shakespeare during the phase of life that is so prejudicially described as difficult (i.e. puberty), but only in the sounds of an acoustic guitar. Posing with his instrument in the large mirror in his parents' house, he was overcome by the hope of becoming a "second Elvis" (as he himself put it).

Februar 1971 in London/GB, galt Damian Lewis Interesse, in der Phase des Lebens, die so vorurteilsvoll belastet, als schwierig bezeichnet wird (also der Pubertät) nicht den Dramen aus der Feder eines William Shakespeare, sondern exklusiv den Klängen einer akustischen Gitarre. Als er dann mit seinem Instrument vor dem großen Spiegel im heimischen Elternhaus posierte, überkam ihn (nach eigener Aussage) die Hoffnung zu einem »zweiten Elvis« aufzusteigen.
In order to get a little closer to this rather ambitious goal, he made his first contact with the public on the streets of the English capital. The response seemed to be so positive that by the time he was in his early twenties, Damian Lewis and his guitar could also be found in the well-frequented squares and streets of mainland Europe. No sooner had he returned to the British Isles than his encounter with Giacomo Smith led to his musical interests turning more and more in the direction of jazz. Giacomo Smith was, and still is, one of the most influential figures on the London jazz scene.
Um diesem, etwas hochgesteckten Ziel näherzukommen, suchte er ersten Kontakt zum Publikum auf den Straßen der englischen Hauptstadt. Die Resonanz schien wohl so positiv, dass Damian Lewis in seinen jungen Zwanzigern mitsamt seiner Gitarre auch an und auf gut frequentierten Plätzen und Straßen auf dem europäischen Festland anzutreffen war. Kaum zurück auf den britischen Inseln, führte die Begegnung mit Giacomo Smith dazu, dass sein musikalisches Interesse sich mehr und mehr dem Jazz zuneigte. Denn jener Giacomo Smith galt und gilt noch heute, als einer der einflussreichsten Protagonisten in der Londoner Jazz-Szene.
Lewis began to write his own songs and gathered a number of other musicians around him to help him fine-tune his first recordings. There were two reasons, however, why it took until the year 2023 for the album "Mission Creep" to be pressed on vinyl. Firstly, he didn't want to be completely dependent on success in music. So he decided to pursue his second passion, theatre acting, and enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As soon as he finished his studies he became a permanent member of the RSC - the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Lewis begann eigene Songs zu schreiben und scharte andere Musiker um sich, um seinen Erstlingen den musikalischen Feinschliff zu verleihen. Dass es dann aber doch sich bis 2023 hinziehen sollte, bis das Album ”Mission Creep” auf Vinyl gepresst wurde, beruhte auf zweierlei Gründen. Um nicht ganz und gar vom Erfolg mit der Musik abhängig zu sein, folgte er früh seiner zweiten Leidenschaft, dem Theaterschauspiel, und schrieb sich an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama ein. Direkt nach dem Abschluss wurde er zum festen Mitglied in der RSC - Royal Shakespeare Company.
Despite his success on the theatre stage, Damian Lewis gave in to the temptations of the cinema and from then on was more interested in the more mainstream demands of the film set. But as soon as the coronavirus pandemic was over, he made his way straight to the recording studio. His five-piece band with jazz roots has a bluesy sound. The album is described as a thoughtful collection of rock and jazzy songs that reveal a deep love of music and a profound need to communicate.
Obwohl erfolgreich auf den Bühnen des Theaters, gab Damian Lewis den Verlockungen der Cineasten nach und stand fortan mehr auf dem vom Mainstream geprägten Verlangen am Filmset. Doch, als die zur Pandemie hochstilisierte Corona sich verflüchtigt hatte, ging der Weg geradewegs ins Tonstudio. Seine fünfköpfige Band mit Jazz-Wurzeln hat einen bluesigen Sound, und das Album wird als eine nachdenkliche Sammlung von rockigen und jazzigen Songs beschrieben, die eine tiefe Liebe zur Musik und ein tiefes Bedürfnis nach Kommunikation offenbaren.
