If someone spontaneously says 'I've never heard that name before', that's perfectly understandable, as the British singer-songwriter has just released her debut album 'Leaving Me'. Under the heading 'Search & Find' everything that has been heard musically from Denver Cuss has to be categorised. From the very beginning of her career (as a fellow student at the College of Music), she has focused exclusively on arrangements in the “Modern-Jazz-Genre”.
Sollte jemand spontan die Aussage treffen: „Den Namen habe ich noch nie gehört.“, dann ist dies durchaus nachvollziehbar, da die britische Singer-Songwriterin jetzt gerade ihr Debütalbum »Leaving Me« vorlegt. All das, was vorher musikalisch von Denver Cuss zu hören war, muss unter der Rubrik „Suchen & Finden“ eingeordnet werden. Gleich zu Beginn ihres Werdegang (als Kommilitonin auf der Hochschule für Musik) richtete sich ihr Interesse ausschließlich auf die Arrangements im modernen Jazz.
Over the years, however, this has undergone a fundamental change and the focus has shifted to the classics in the great cymbal of jazz. Related styles such as blues and soul have also been part of the mix. These are only a few examples: The Doo-Wop and Chicago soul pioneers 'The Impressions', 'Sarah Vaughan' and 'Aretha Franklin', and the echoing, modern R&B sounds of 'Thee Sacred Souls' and 'The Altons'. This is probably where the emotion and passion of Denver Cuss's distinctive voice comes from.
Doch änderte sich dies im Laufe der Jahre grundlegend und das Augenmerk galt den Klassikern im riesigen Becken des Jazz. Wobei auch die an verwandten Stilrichtungen, wie etwa der Blues oder der Soul mit einbezogen wurden. Als da wären zu nennen: Die Doo-Wop- und Chicago-Soul-Pioniere „The Impressions“, „Sarah Vaughan“ und „Aretha Franklin“ sowie den hallenden, modernen R&B-Klängen von „Thee Sacred Souls“ und „The Altons“. Daher stammt wohl auch die Emotion und Leidenschaft von Denver Cuss unverwechselbarer Stimme.
A piece of music that transcends the boundaries of Jazz, this debut album is therefore a piece of music history. This is also thanks to the co-writer 'Kit Warren' and the producer 'PM Warson', who actively supported the excursion into the nostalgic style of the 60s. The chapter of 'Modern-Jazz-Fusion' has now been closed for good. PM Warson was no stranger to Cuss, as she had been a background singer in the formation of his band. With the addition of Kit Warren in 2022, they were at the start of the song-writing process.
Somit ist dieses Debütalbum ein Stück Musikgeschichte, das über die Grenzen des Jazz hinausgeht. Dies ist auch zu verdanken dem Co-Writer „Kit Warren“ und dem Produzenten „PM Warson“, die den Ausflug in den nostalgischen Stil der 60er Jahre tatkräftig unterstützten. Das Kapitel »Modern-Jazz-Fusion« ist damit endgültig geschlossen. Für Cuss war PM Warson kein Unbekannter, da sie in dessen Formation als Backgroundsängerin fungierte. 2022 stieß noch Kit Warren dazu und man begann mit dem Schreiben der Songs.
In order to optimise the recordings that followed, a number of studios in London were used: . The Cube in Stoke Newington for the drum sound, Hackney Road Studios for the lead vocals and Sam Beers Studio in Acton for the Hammond, Wurlitzer and backing vocals. In total, more than a dozen musicians were involved in the production of the album. The common thread of the style of the arrangements, rooted in R&B, is remarkable.
Um die daraufhin folgenden Aufnahmen optimal gestalten zu können, wurden gleich mehrere Studios in London genutzt: . The Cube in Stoke Newington für den Schlagzeugsound, Hackney Road Studios für die Leadvocals und Sam Beers Studio in Acton für Hammond, Wurlitzer und Backing Vocals. Insgesamt waren mehr als zwölf Musiker an der Produktion beteiligt. Bemerkenswert ist dabei der rote Faden vom im R&B verwurzelten Stil die Arrangements zu gestalten.
