Warhammer 40k - Unit Review Library 74 - Space Wolves, Wolf Guard

Source

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!

Now known as the Unit Review Library!

What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!

In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.

So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:

Space Wolves, Wolf Guard

10th Edition Index

Space Wolves have elite units called Wolf Guard. These units are the equivalent of Vanguard and Sternguard Veterans.

In the Lore, the Wolf Guard are a hand-picked band of warriors chosen by the Wolf Lord of each Great Company to lead squads or sometimes band up in elite units.

Wolf Guard squads used to have a massive amount of weapon options, but the 10th Edition Datasheet is a bit different.

A unit of 5 models is 95pts while a unit of 10 is 190pts.

To build the unit, you can buy the GW Grey Hunter box, that box is used to build Blood Claws, Grey Hunters or Wolf Guard. The Sprues contain all the parts for all three. The box costs $60.

Let's check their stats!

Stats

Movement 6"
Toughness 4
Save 3+(armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 2
Ld 5+
OC 1

Weapons

The Wolf Guard have Bolt Pistols but can change them for the following:

◦ 1 boltgun
◦ 1 combi-weapon
◦ 1 plasma pistol
◦ 1 storm bolter
◦ 1 storm shield

The most popular option is the Storm Shields as this gives them a 4++ Invul save.

If you want to, however, you can give them ranged weapons without giving up their close combat weapons.

Ranged:

Bolt Pistol
12" Range, 1 Shot, Hitting on 3+. S4, AP0 and 1 Damage.
Pistol

Boltgun
24" Range, 2 Shots, 3+ to Hit, S4, AP0 and 1 Damage each.

Combi-weapon
24" Range, 1 Shot, 4+ to Hit, S4, AP0 and 1 Damage each.
Rapid Fire 1, Anti-Infantry 4+, Devastating Wounds

Storm Bolter
24" Range, 2 Shots, 3+ to Hit, S4, AP0 and 1 Damage each.
Rapid Fire 2

Plasma Pistol - Standard
12" Range, 1 Shot, Hitting on 3+. S7, AP-2 and 1 Damage.
Pistol

Plasma Pistol - Overcharge
12" Range, 1 Shot, Hitting on 3+. S8, AP-3 and 2 Damage.
Pistol, Hazardous

Melee:

Heirloom weapon
4 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S5, AP-1 and 1 Damage each.

Abilities

Chosen Companions

While a Character is leading the unit, the squad get's +1 to Hit for both Ranged and Melee Attacks.

This +1 to Hit is given to the character leading the unit as well. Sometimes this does not matter as a lot of leaders Hit on a 2+ but it can help to counter enemy effects that give you -1 to Hit. For example - Death Guard's Skullsquirm Blight (Aura) which would worsen the Wolf Guard's WS or BS by 1.

Thoughts

I have not seen anyone bother to play Wolf Guard in competitive Tournament armies, they are not a BAD unit, but they might be overshadowed by other units which may be more effective for their points costs.

I will however model a unit or two of them for my Great Company. I do currently have a unit of them with Jump Packs, but that is a different Data Sheet to review.

That is 2 Space Wolves Datasheets reviewed putting them on 5.71% Completed and the total Completed on 7.62% Complete!

Thank you for reading!
