Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.
So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:
Death Guard, Lord of Contagion
10th Edition Index
Another Death Guard entry, this time one of the HQ Characters - the Lord of Contagion.
Pretty much a melee character that can lead either of the two Death Guard Terminator units, he costs 80pts and has a good toughness which makes me think he would be an essential leader in smaller points games but I am not so sure about the larger game values.
He is good for boosting Deathshroud Terminators, which has not come up in the review yet. The LOC can lead Blightlord Terminators as well, but with their Blistering Fullisade ability, it is clear that they are primarily a ranged unit while the LOC boosts the melee ability of a unit.
Call it a conflict of role, really depends on the role but there is another Death Guard, the Lord of Virulence that would be a better match for the Blightlords.
So lets look at the LOC and see what he can do!
Stats
Movement 4" (Super slow! Better use that Deep Strike!)
Toughness 6 (Super tough!)
Save 2+/4++(armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 6
Ld 6+
OC 1
Weapons
This guy has zero ranged weapons.
Melee:
His Plague Blade has 2 strike options, you need to choose one of the two.
Plage Blade - Strike:
5 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S8, AP-2 and 3 Damage Each with Lethal Hits meaning 6 to hit auto-wounds.
This is a Marine/Terminator killing strike and great for putting wounds on tanks.
Plage Blade - Sweep:
10 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S5, AP0 and 1 Damage Each with Lethal Hits meaning 6 to hit auto-wounds.
Obviously an anti-horde option. It might also be worthy to note that this weapon becomes much less effective even when fighting units with 1 wound each when they have good armor.
Abilities
Deep Strike (They can be put into reserves an appear anywhere on the battlefield outside 9" of an enemy at the start of a turn)
Vector of Disease
While leading a unit, every model in the unit can re-roll the to Hit roll for melee attacks only. This is why I say he is the melee option as a Lord.
Also, with Lethal Hits on all the melee weapons of the units that he leads, you can re-roll all the to Hit dice you want so you can "fish for 6s". This means you roll attacks, keep the 6s and roll the other dice again and get more 6s.
Those now auto-wound and the other hits can be rolled to see if wounding happens.
So this is a direct damage buffing ability and can enable the squad to take on units with massive toughness.
Abundance of Sickness
When the LOC loses a wound in the Fight Phase, roll a D6, on a 4+ a unit in engagement with him takes a mortal wound.
Its written so that should he loose all 6 wounds in one go, you would roll 6 dice and on 4+ he can allocate those mortal wounds on units.
You can't block Mortal Wounds except for Feel No Pains.
So... not a bad unit for 80pts. Melee units that are a bit slow though. It would make sense to spend a CP to use Rapid Ingress like my friend Nicholas uses it and then have a movement and charge the next turn.
There is no point really in marching Deathshroud across the board at 4" a turn (Though you could make them run)
Thank you for reading!
