Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!

In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.

So let me spin the wheel and see what I get:

Dark Angels - Azrael

Dark Angels again?! What are the chances? @exptrader shall be pleased!

Well, the Wheel shall be obeyed!

Azrael is the Supreme Grand Master of the Dark Angels Chapter... which means that he is the Chapter Master. In secret, it also means that he is networked with the successor Chapters of the Unforgiven.

Let's have a look at his rules!

Statline

6" Move as per Infantry.
Toughness 4 with a 2+ Save and 4+ Invul
6 Wounds (Usually the case with a Chapter Master)
Leadership is 6+

Weapons

For Ranged he has the Lion's Wrath. This is a Combi-plasma bolt gun.

2 Shots at 24", or 3 shots at 12". S8 Ap-3 and Damage 2 It has both Devastating Wounds and Anti-Infantry 4+

This is basically a Overcharged Plasma gun without the Hazardous rule!

With S8 there is no need for Anti-Infantry 4+ on its own as MOST Infantry is not so tough, what is happening here is that the 4+ on Infantry is causing a Critical Wound, which triggers Devastating Wounds. This means it ignores both Armor Saves and Invulnerable Saves.

So, if he was shooting at a Chaplain like Asmodai in the previous post then Asmodai would have a 4+ save against a AP -3 weapon.

Azrael needs a 2+ to Wound Asmodai with Lion's Wrath. On a 4+ it cuts through the Invul save Asmodai has. If he gets two of these through then Asmodai is dead.

For Melee Azrael wields the Sword of Secrets: 6 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, Strength 6, Ap -4 and Damage 2.

Ap -4 is MASSIVE, it means a 3+ Save is a 7+, which means no save at all. A 2+ becomes a 6+.

Thus he is great at killing Space Marines in Power Armor and even putting the hurt into things like Terminators.

Abilities

  • Supreme Grand Master
    With this rule all attacks gain Sustained Hits 1, meaning that when you roll to Hit, all the 6's score an additional hit.

This is great for both shooting and assault!

  • Masterful Tactician
    When Azrael is on the board at the start of your Command Phase, you gain an additional Command Point.

All in all Azrael can be used in both an Assault capacity and a Defensive shooting capacity. The additional Command Points are very valuable, especially when you have a PLAN for them!

I own the older model pictured below. There is also a new model since Azrael crossed the rubicon and became a Primaris Marine.
