Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
However, on the 26th one, I have decided that it is big enough to call this series a Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.
So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:
Grey Knights, Grand Master
10th Edition Index
Grey Knights are special Space Marines, made specifically to kill Demons. They are all psychic and their creation and existence is mostly a secret in the Imperium of man.
I did a review of the Brother Captain datasheet. A Brother Captain is a leader who commands on the field of battle.
The Grey Knights Chapter has 8 Brotherhoods and 2 additional Orders, which effectively make up 10 "Companies" if they were a regular Chapter of Space Marines.
While a Captain would lead a Company, the Brotherhood's true leadership is that of a Grand Master. They have a Captain as well because the Captain might lead and be part of all combat assignments while the Grand Master works on and off the Battlefield. Sometimes as a liaison or an investigator while the Captain does the grunt work in the field.
Grand Masters are even more elite than the Captains in Battle and cost 95pts to run. They can lead either Brotherhood Terminators or Paladin squads.
Let's see their stats.
Stats
Stats-wise he is a Terminator Character, the only stand-out thing is the massive amount of Wounds he possesses.
Movement 5"
Toughness 5
Save 2+/4++(armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 7
Ld 6+
OC 1
Weapons
Ranged:
The Grand Master, like the Brother Captain gets to swap out his Storm Bolter for the three GK Terminator Special Weapons.
Incinerator - A S6, Ap-1 Flamer
Psylencer - A 6 Shot, S5 AP0 D1 gun with Sustained Hits 1 - good for anti-horde
Psycannon - 3 Shots, S8, AP-1 and 2 Damage each for anti- heavy infantry
Melee:
Same as the Brother Captain but with an extra attack
Nemesis force weapon
5 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, Strength 6, Ap -2 and 2 Damage each.
Abilities
Master Strategist
Once per battle he can use a Stratagem for 0CP. I feel a little cheated when I think of Space Marine Captains with Rites of Battle doing that every turn... but Grey Knight army balance is different.
Might of Purity
The Grand Master and his unit do not suffer modifiers to their characteristics. This is like units that have Auras and abilities to lower the Strength, Toughness or Accuracy of their weapons. The Grand Master ignores these and can still be effected by positive enforcements!
I suppose that the Grand Master is usable, but with Empyric Amplification on the Brother Captain, I feel that he has better damage output.
Perhaps the Grand Master would be better at holding down objectives while the Brother Captain is far better at throwing out massive damage.
In that case I would possibly look at compounding this by putting a Grand Master with a Brotherhood unit and the Captain with Paladins... but I have yet to review those units on Hive!
Thank you for reading!
