Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.
So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:
Adeptus Custodes, Shield-Captain
10th Edition Codex
The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor's personal Guard. They are the Golden Legion. The 10,000.
As far as soldiers go, they are elites among elites and Shield-Captains are their leaders.
A Shield-Captain is currently 140pts all on his own.
You cannot buy a Shield Captain. Instead, you can build one out of the Custodian Guard kit. That kit is £37.50 for the box of 5 models.
So let's see what he does...
Let's check those stats!
Stats
Movement 6"
Toughness 6
Save 2+/4++(armor/invul/Feel No Pain)
Wounds 6
Ld 6+
OC 2
Weapons
The Shield-Captain starts with the Guardian Spear, which is a great weapon but it can be swapped out for the following:
- 1 castellan axe - Harder hitting
- 1 sentinel blade - Softer hitting and makes no sense without a shield!
- 1 sentinel blade and 1 praesidium shield - This combo makes sense!
- 1 pyrithite spear and 1 praesidium shield - A better anti-tank gun.
Ranged:
The Guardian Spear and the Castellan Axe both shoot the same:
24" Range, 2 Shots, Hitting on 2+. S4, AP-1 and 2 Damage each. Both with the Assault keyword, meaning Advance and Shoot!
The Sentinel Blade is the pistol version on a sword:
12" Range, 2 Shots, Hitting on 2+. S4, AP-1 and 2 Damge each. With both Pistol and Assault. So while it has a shorter range, you may fire it while engaged in melee.
Lastly the new Pyrithite spear:
12" Range, Single shot, hitting on 2+, S9, AP-4 and Damage roll D6 with Melta 2, so +2 Damage at 6"
This gun is for killing tough things like tanks.
Melee:
He has a fair bit of options:
The Guardian Spear and Pyrithite spear are the same in melee:
7 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S7, AP-2 and 2 Damage each.
The Sentinel blade hits with with less power:
7 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S6, AP-2 and 1 Damage each
But you can then use a shield and have +1W
Finally the Castellan Axe:
6 Attacks, Hitting on 2+, S9, AP-1 And 3 Damage each! Good for killing tanks and Monsters!
Abilities
Deep Strike
Master of the Stances
Once per battle this model and his unit can use both of the Custodes Stances. As far as I remember, one gives Sustained hits 1 and the other gives Lethal Hits. They would work awesome together.
Strategic Mastery
Once per Battle Round the Captain and his unit can use a Battle Tactic Stratagem for 0CP. If you have more than one of these guys you can only do one free Stratagem.
Thoughts
Overall, this guy is a beast and I have nothing to complain about. They are usually the last man standing in a unit and on their own they can wreck and do a lot of damage.
Thank you for reading!
