iskawrites turns in another great story. She writes of a man who longs for a baby — not a baby in the abstract, but a baby that requires the specific details of nurturing. He had raised his sister from infancy and did so love the experience that he wanted to repeat it. His wife resists the idea of being a mother, but finds out one day that she is pregnant. She weeps, but he consoles her, and they both agree that he will be the one getting up for the baby at night. As the story ends, readers can imagine his secret glee as he prepares for the amazing chore of being a mom once again.

Time and again I read @nancybriti1’s stories and think to myself: there’s no topping that. However, she does “top” it and this piece is no exception. By the end of this sweet story about a very special relationship between children and their grandmother, you will not have dry eyes, people. You will not! Oh, my it’s so lovely.

Curator comment:
@popurri writes a lovely story about an indigenous family of sheepherders in an imagined ancient time in which wolves were hunted nearly to extinction and therefore other dangerous species took over. The story is told from the perspective of twin boys whose mother died in childbirth. They have been raised by their grandparents. One is full of rancor and the other calm and devoted to caring for living things, due to a wish his mother made upon a star before she died. The culmination of the story arc occurs when the boys and their grandfather come across a wolf mother and her pups, and must decide whether to help her and treat her injury, or kill her to preserve their sheep. Of course they make the right choice, which helps to create balance in the natural world. It's really a great read!

@loveth97 writes a beautiful story about an orphan girl whose wish is to be a singing star. The story takes place in a bar where the young girl sings, under the care of the bartender, since her mother died. On her way out that night, the talented young woman makes a wish on a shooting star. The wish is granted when a talent sponsor hears her sing.
Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week
This week's prompt is: "Diary."
A diary, or journal, is a place to record one's thoughts and feelings. Many people write in a diary when they need to tell their innermost secrets and there is no friend to trust with that information. Others record the events of their lives, and even the behaviors of others.
Sometimes people lock up their diary or hide it in order to prevent anyone else from seeing it. Can you imagine a scenario in which a diary could be at the center of a story conflict? What if someone found a diary and could not resist reading it? What if the writer of the diary wrote about a family secret? What if they revealed they had committed a crime? There are so many possibilities!
Tell us a story about a diary!
Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:
- Great first lines
- Good settings
- Well-developed characters
- Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
- A conflict that intrigues the reader
- A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
- And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors
