This saying is intended to point out that, with a minimal signal from someone or something, we can know in advance the good or evil that they can cause us. It is these signs that make it easier for us to understand the nature of people or things, which is why it is always convenient to observe and analyze from the beginning, not to overlook anything, that is what this saying tries to say.
This means that the faults and peculiarities of each individual are supported by each one. It is a saying that is also used to point out that no one is hampered by their own burdens, tasks and responsibilities. Sometimes I have heard that they use it with a very macho connotation, to justify that women must stoically endure the infidelities (cheating) of their partners. A saying that I really do not like, because if we have defects, it is our duty to correct them and on the other hand, infidelity and disloyalty are not justified.
This proverb is meant to point out that something false is only believed by fools, who swallow whole the lie they are told. It is a saying to point out a lie, to make us see that what we are told is a falsehood..
Saying that indicates inconsistency, hypocrisy and hidden evil. It is similar to: "Tell me what you advertise and I'll tell you what you don't have", and it is also a VERY ACCURATE saying, since many people live by self-promoting themselves and appearing good, friendly, clean, and they are totally otherwise.
To know where the Devil went to buy corn, you need to be very curious, gossipy and be aware of the lives of others, to be investigating the affairs of others; and this is what this saying tries to say, to indicate that someone is very curious and likes to gossip, living the life of others and not their own.
