Continuing with my reviews of anime with an '80s or '90s theme, today I'll be talking about Psycho-Pass. It's a series that came out in 2012, but the animation style reminds me so much of the era I mentioned at the beginning. This is one of the aspects I like most about the series, in addition to its excellent plot. This anime presents a dystopian, cyberpunk universe with futuristic touches very well implemented in each episode. Its plot focuses on showing that society is governed by the Sibyl System, a system that allows for the evaluation of each individual's neural levels and predicts whether or not they will commit a crime so they can be arrested before it happens.
Continuando con mis reseΓ±as de animΓ©s de temΓ‘tica ochentera o de los aΓ±os 90, les hablarΓ© hoy de Psycho-Pass. Una serie que saliΓ³ en 2012, pero el diseΓ±o de animaciΓ³n me recuerda demasiado a la Γ©poca que les mencionΓ© al inicio. Siendo este uno de los aspectos que mΓ‘s me agradan de la serie, ademΓ‘s de su excelente trama. Este animΓ© muestra un universo distΓ³pico en modo cyberpunk con toques futuristas muy bien plasmados en cada episodio. Y su trama se enfoca en mostrar que la sociedad estΓ‘ regida por el Sistema Sibyl, un sistema que permite evaluar los niveles neuronales de cada individuo y predecir si cometerΓ‘ o no un crimen para que sea arrestado antes de que suceda.
One could say it bears a certain resemblance to the plot of the film Minority Report, starring Tom Cruise, but although they share some similarities, the stories are entirely different. The plot focuses on the character of Akane Tsunemori, the rookie detective who joins the Criminal Investigation Division at the very beginning of the series. Her job is to supervise the "Enforcers" (criminals with high crime coefficients, making them dangerous to society, but who are tasked with doing the police's dirty work: hunting down other criminals with a special weapon that only fires when authorized by the system). This young woman represents morality in this system that operates solely on automated orders.
Se podrΓa decir que tiene cierto parecido a la trama de la pelΓcula Minority Report, protagonizada por Tom Cruise, pero aunque se parezcan en ciertos aspectos, las historias son totalmente diferentes. La trama se enfoca en el personaje de Akane Tsunemori, la inspectora novata que se une apenas inicia la serie a la DivisiΓ³n de InvestigaciΓ³n Criminal, y cuyo trabajo consiste en supervisar a los "Ejecutores" (criminales que poseen alto coeficiente de criminalidad y que los hacen peligrosos para la sociedad pero que estΓ‘n encargados de realizar el trabajo sucio de la policia, el cual es cazar a otros criminales con un arma especial que sΓ³lo se dispara si el sistema lo autoriza). Esta chica representa la moralidad en este sistema que sΓ³lo se rige por Γ³rdenes automΓ‘ticas.
Besides Akane, we have another protagonist named Shinya Kogami, who plays a brilliant and cynical enforcer, but who in his past worked as an inspector. Another aspect I really liked about the series is that it shows both sides of the coin with these two opposites, and as the series progresses, each of them changes and adapts to the other's perspective, leading them to work together to improve this flawed system that fails to uncover the truth behind crimes and achieve a humane trial that fosters empathy for both victims and future killers.
AdemΓ‘s de Akane, tenemos a otro protagonista llamado Shinya Kogami, quien interpreta a un ejecutor brillante y cΓnico, pero que en su pasado trabajΓ³ como inspector. Otro aspecto que me gustΓ³ bastante de la serie es que te muestran las dos caras de la moneda con estos dos personajes que son polos opuestos y que a medida que la serie avanza, cada uno de ellos va cambiando y adaptΓ‘ndose a la perspectiva del otro, llevΓ‘ndolos a trabajar juntos para mejorar este sistema que posee tantas fallas ya que no permite encontrar la verdad detrΓ‘s de los crΓmenes y alcanzar un juicio humano que brinde empatΓa tanto a las vΓctimas como a los futuros asesinos.
On the other hand, at the beginning of the series, Akane is shown as someone who firmly believes in the perfect functionality of the Sibyl System, but as the episodes progress, she realizes that the reality on the ground is completely different from what she knew. This leads her to question herself and makes her evolution in the series the foundation of its narrative. She is considered the heroine of the story, since it is through her that a balance is created to improve the system from within instead of seeking to destroy it.
Por otro lado, al inicio de la serie se muestra una Akane que cree firmemente en la funcionalidad perfecta del Sistema Sibyl, pero a medida que avanzan los episodios, se da cuenta de que la realidad en el campo es totalmente diferente a lo que conocΓa. Esto la hace cuestionarse a sΓ misma y hace que su evoluciΓ³n en la serie sea la base para la narrativa de la misma. A ella es quien se le considera la heroΓna de la historia, ya que es a travΓ©s de ella que se crea una balanza para mejorar el sistema desde adentro en vez de buscar destruirlo.
The Psycho-Pass series stands as a landmark of modern animation. Its production design is outstanding, presenting a technologically advanced future with iconic elements like the Dominator device. Complementing this aesthetic, the music is intense and immersive, perfectly capturing the weight and psychological pressure that characterize the narrative. Although the Psycho-Pass universe has expanded with spin-offs and sequels of varying quality, the first season remains its pinnacle. It not only satisfies fans of the cyberpunk and crime genres; its true value lies in being a profound allegory about a surveillance society. It is a dark, yet fascinatingly constructed narrative that questions what it means to maintain humanity in a world where justice has been automated and dehumanized.
La serie Psycho-Pass se erige como un hito de la animaciΓ³n moderna. Su diseΓ±o de producciΓ³n es sobresaliente, presenta un futuro tecnolΓ³gicamente avanzado con elementos icΓ³nicos como el dispositivo Dominator. Complementando esta estΓ©tica, la mΓΊsica es intensa y envolvente, capturando a la perfecciΓ³n el peso y la presiΓ³n psicolΓ³gica que caracteriza a la narrativa.
