I managed to see Look Back, the movie based on the manga of the same name written by Fujimoto. A movie that when it came out went around the world as a great anime movie that everyone needed to see, with tweets from hundreds of animators praising it, including Hideo Kojima, the creator of Silent Hill and Metal Gear. A movie that had been out for months already and that I had already thought about watching at home because I saw it almost impossible for it to be released here, came and made me cry a little in a room that was obviously almost completely empty.

Una película que cuando salió le dio la vuelta al mundo cómo una gran película de anime que todos necesitaban ver, con tuits de cientos de animadores alabándola, contando entre tantos, a Hideo Kojima, el creador de Silent Hill y Metal Gear. Una película que había salido hace meses ya y que ya había pensado en verla en mi casa porque veía de forma casi imposible que se estrenara aquí, vino y me hizo llorar un poco en una sala que, obviamente, estaba casi completamente vacía

I've talked a lot about Fujimoto, and in this post I really don't think it's worth doing so, because the film speaks for itself. Adapting a one-shot that is less than 200 pages long, Look back is 58 minutes long, which surprises me both for the length and the fact that it was produced as a movie instead of an OVA. For the short length, the film is super concise and gets to the point from the first frame, but that's not to say that the film is rushed paced or doesn't take its time telling things; in fact, I think the timing in the film is one of the best things about it, and, no lie, I think everything it does it does well.

He hablado mucho de Fujimoto, y en este post realmente no creo que merezca la pena hacerlo, porque la película habla por sí sola. Adaptando un one shot que tiene menos de 200 páginas, Look back tiene una duración de 58 minutos, lo que me sorprende tanto por la duración cómo por el hecho de que la hayan producido como película en vez de OVA. Por la corta duración, la película es súper concisa y va al punto desde el primer frame, pero eso no quiere decir que la película tenga un ritmo apresurado o que no se tome su tiempo para contar las cosas; de hecho, creo que el timing en la película es de las mejores cosas que tiene, y, sin mentir, creo que todo lo que hace lo hace bien.

Look back shows us firsthand Fujino, a fourth grader who draws for her school's weekly manga. Eventually, Kyomoto, a student who studies from home also starts doing manga for the school newspaper, and so Fujino realizes that she's not as good at drawing as she thought she was. I hadn't read the manga, so I thought the story would go for the idea of envy and understanding that no matter how hard you try, you can improve, but you can't beat talent; however, Fujimoto does something much more human and shows us a very friendly relationship between these two students who mutually inspire each other to be better every day until they reach a goal. This, with the drawing and animation that is so smooth and beautiful that it makes you want to capture it or take several clips to watch and simply admire, makes Look back a beautiful film that will make you sentimental in one way or another.

Look back nos muestra de primera mano a Fujino, una estudiante de cuarto grado que dibuja para el manga semanal de su escuela. Con el tiempo, Kyomoto, una estudiante que estudia desde casa también empieza a hacer manga para el periódico de la escuela, y así Fujino se da cuenta de que no es tan buena dibujando como creía. No había leído el manga, por lo que pensé que la historia se iría por la idea de la envidia y el entender que a pesar de lo mucho que te esfuerces, si puedes mejorar, pero no puedes ganarle al talento; sin embargo, Fujimoto hace algo mucho más humano y nos muestra una relación muy amigable entre estas dos estudiantes que mutuamente se inspiran a ser mejor cada día hasta llegar a una meta. Esto, con el dibujo y la animación que es tan suave y preciosa que dan ganas de tomarle capture o de sacar varios clips para verlos y simplemente admirar, hacen de Look back una película preciosa que te pondrá sentimental de una u otra manera.

And I say this because the musical selection is no slouch either. Among so much silence and little dialogue, the music becomes the protagonist in many scenes and it is an absolute success that could not have worked better for a film that feels as melancholic as it is beautiful. A film that for me is a blessing to have seen in theaters and therefore I know it will stay in my heart for a long time, but beyond the experience of seeing it on the big screen, the film overall is more than worth it, being one of the best animated films of the year.

Y digo esto porque la selección musical tampoco se queda atrás. Entre tanto silencio y poco dialogo, la música se vuelve protagonista en muchas escenas y es un absoluto acierto que no pudo haber funcionado mejor para una película que se siente tan melancólica como hermosa. Una película que para mí es una bendición haberla visto en cines y que por eso sé que se va a quedar en mi corazón por mucho tiempo, pero más allá de la experiencia de verla en pantalla grande, la película en general vale más que la pena, siendo una de las mejores películas animadas del año.
