Today is a day of returning in many respects. First of all, I'm returning to the ever growing CCC Street Art Contest, with more than two dozen competitors by its 43rd edition. At the same time, I am returning to one of my favorite eateries, which I introduced in one of my earliest mural posts. The name of the restaurant is ChilaKillers and for a while I thought I lost it.
Not the End, But a New Beginning
ChilaKillers used to enjoy somewhat of a cult status in our area, not only for raising Chilaquiles, the most basic and tasty Mexican breakfast food, to a completely new level, enriching the basic recipe with exquisite sauces. The restaurant was also known for its cool murals all over the walls, on the inside and outside of this very trendy restaurant.
But then came the Covid, and the place closed... After months of no life sign, I was convinced the establishment didn't survive the lockdown. Never mind the fact that even before the pandemic you knew you had to stand in line for about half an hour outside on weekend mornings, before being seated. That's how popular ChilaKillers used to be.
Now imagine my excitement when I saw the sign at the closed place, announcing their re-opining, only two blocks down the street, at a completely remodeled two-story location, of course with plenty of murals. So we went, enjoyed the food that hasn't lost a bit of its tastiness, and inspected the new murals. To get an idea of the tastes, take a look at their menu!
This one features a Xoloescuincle dog, like the one in my recent post, stylized in colorful indigenous patterns. All around the dog we can see the main ingredients of chilaquiles floating around: tortilla chips and chili peppers (most likely jalapeños).
The artist behind this work is clearly identifiable as Yurico Cerón, however I didn't manage to find any online presence of (presumably) her. But for anyone interested, please visit this wonderful place, to look at their murals and maybe even try their food. It's certainly worth it. They are located at Av. Revolución 107-Local 7, in the Tacubaya neighborhood, close to the corner of Antonio Maceo.
