Mexican Murals - Awesome Swampyness on Cozumel [CCC's Street Art Contest #36]

Mexico is full of murals, as this series will illustrate. However, on my recent trip to the Rivera Maya I noticed that the rest of Mexico, even the capital, can't hold a candle to the abundance of murals in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel. I mean, they are just everywhere! In fact, there are so many cool wall paintings wherever you look, that I even got muraled out. Meaning, I didn't have the passion to photograph every single one... and after a while I stopped taking pictures all together.

For this week's CCC Street Art Challenge I want to share one that was just outside the place we stayed at on Cozumel Island. More precisely, it is located on Calle 10 Norte close to the corner of Av. Rafael E. Melgar.

Swamp Imagery in Different Styles

This time I can't say too much about the interpretation of this piece, except for it fits perfectly well into the heat and oppressive humidity on Cozumel. The background looks a lot like water, evaporating into the sky, forming clouds, wanting to rain down again. Exactly the imagery you can literally feel in the heat.

The center circle with the lighthouse drives this even further, creating an appearance of a nighttime view of a swamp, complete with creepy fish, reptiles, and other life forms. The circle on the left, painted in a completely different style shows the face of a ... maybe a swamp dweller? Her expression looks friendly and spooky at the same time, just like the intriguing yet foreboding feel of a swamp.

The circle on the right, once again in a different style, is just an ocean wave, I didn't even find worthy of taking a detail shot of. These three styles suggest three distinct artists. Are they? Well, the tag on the bottom suggests their names may be Teik (with or without the 'an'), Taeer and Skup. As for their own pages, I didn't find them. Even on the Sea Wall's artist list where they are featured (except for Skup), their profiles are empty. Too bad... I still like the mural they painted.
