Granted, these days the exploding heart is not the biggest health concern of the people in Mazunte... or anywhere in the world, for that matter. Though traditionally, it's the chagas disease, transmitted by the kissing bug that has been causing lots of worried minds. Consequently, this topic dominates many murals, whether they may be an official public health message, or a funny take on the same subject.
Unofficial, Anonymous, yet Visually Stimulating
So staying with the topic of an exploding heart, the artist behind this unsigned piece decided to take the explosion literally: by using a hand grenade to illustrate this explosion. The way your heart "bursts" as the effect of the chagas disease is probably a much nastier, though less spectacular event than the explosion of such a weapon. However, the similar sizes and shapes of the grenade and the heart make for an impressive image.
The location is just off Rinconcito to one of the few small side streets connecting to it. In fact, you can't miss it, walking down the main access to the beach of Mazunte. Though as I mentioned, the artist left no identifying mark, so just like many others of its kind, all the remaining info on this wall painting remains up to speculation.
