Mexican Murals - Dive Shop on Cozumel [CCC's Street Art Contest #37]

For this weeks's Street Art Contest by CCC I'm going to continue with another mural I found in the center of town on Cozumel Island. I had just arrived, and I was still overwhelmed by the many huge colorful murals everywhere.

This image is decorating the outside walls of the Pro Dive dive shop, on the corner of Dr. Adolfo Rosado Salas and 5a Avenida sur, right in the center. Clearly, what is surfing for Mazunte, that's diving for Cozumel.

The southern wall shows an underwater scene, including a moray eel winding itself around a sunken Maya statue. Very cool.

The mural around the corner on the eastern wall shows a similar Mayan statue, but instead of more undersea scenery, it shows land based life forms: an iguana, a snake, and a hummingbird. All of which are quite abundant on this island, though are only indirectly related to diving.

Artist and Organizations Behind This Work

In the bottom left corner of this latter image you can see a list of names that made this mural possible. One of them is the Sea Walls, which organized a good number of murals on Cozumel. Another name included are Cinzah Merkens, a New Zealand based muralist who painted this piece. Finally, you'll see Pangeaseed, a Hawaiian foundation for culture and environmentalism.
