Beer Tasting: Pek, Velebitsko and Karlovačko

Hello, beer tasters! 🍻 😎 🍻

How are you? Today's post is a little different than usual. It's summer here in our country, the tourist season for the migration of peoples is slowly starting, everyone who wants to travel must have a certificate that he has had a corona, or that he has been vaccinated or tested. OK, I have a vaccination certificate. And why am I mentioning all this?

There have been changes in my favorite place to rest, on the island of Pag, at the Sveti Duh camp. A new owner has arrived and I had to go there urgently to sort some things out before we all go with the family. So I set off after lunch.

I started, of course, with a little beer at the nearest brewery to me, haha. The Pek Brewery and Pub, in the village of Dolenje, a few kilometers from the Croatian border. The owner is an acquaintance of mine, who is also a very good guitarist. I stopped in for a quick one, for some recordings, I wanted a coffee, but he said he had just brewed a new beer if I wanted to try it?

What to do? I had no choice but to try the young beer, Pek Lager. It's a micro-brewery and they only serve beer in their own pub. It was really young and fresh, smelling of freshly picked hops and malt. A classic lager, very good.

I had to keep going because on Friday afternoon the traffic starts to increase, everyone is rushing to the sea and there is also a crowd at the border.
Well, as it's not high season yet, I waited just a few minutes, showed my ID and vaccination certificate, and went on, first on the motorway past Rijeka and then on the road called the Adriatic Highway towards Prizna, where the ferries go to the island of Pag.

I took this photo at Crikvenica, with the island of Krk in the background, which is Croatia's largest island.

After a good two and a half hours, I reached Prizna and, as usual, missed the ferry by a few minutes. As it's not yet the official tourist season, the next one leaves in an hour.

What is one supposed to do when waiting for a ferry in very hot and humid weather? Yes, decide to have a cold beer :)
If I have time while waiting for the ferry, I always have a beer here, usually a Velebitsko beer.

Velebitsko svijetlo, brewed by Ličanka brewery. Lager, light yellow in color. Alcohol 5% ABV. The head is solid, tasting of hops and malt, but nothing pronounced.

Well, when you're in the shade and there's a cold beer in front of you, you don't think too much about all that. Since it was chilled it was still pretty good. I've had this beer several times, and I have the feeling that it used to be better.

I'm already on the ferry and in a few minutes, we will land on the island of Pag.

After a journey of just over four hours, I reach my destination.
I have been going on holiday to this bay and the campsite below for more than twenty years, first with a tent, then with a campervan, and for the last few years with a caravan.
Although things have changed now, it's kind of hard for me to change now and go somewhere else. But what do I know, maybe I am too old for such changes.

I wouldn't go into detail about what I did there now, that's another story for another time :)

Anyway, I sorted things out, spent the night there, and went back the next day. I got on the ferry on time, again traveling in the heat and humidity.
After less than an hour's drive, I stopped at Camping Kozice on the Adriatic coast. There is a big car park and a shop on the side of the road where I bought a cold can of Karlovačko beer.

Again lager, brewed by Heineken Hrvatska, formerly Karlovačka pivovara. Alcohol 5% ABV. No pronounced odor.
The taste is barley and hops and that's it, nothing special. It was very cold, which is what counts.

After two hours of driving, I was home. Here is a map of the route from Google maps, if anyone is interested.
