Part 94

Millmor waited long seconds for Derric to slowly roll over from his back and lay on his great serpentine head on the ground. He rent half a dozen undead apart that came too close.

Then suddenly a massive hand crashed down next to Derric. The mass of the creature's flesh seemed to be reaching out desperately towards Derric's body. Even the Ghoul King could only shudder at the idea of the human flesh pieces reaching out to consume.

The Avatar of the Dead did not reach Derric because his fiery counterpart would not allow him to. It was not an action of defense or salvation. Instead, it was merely the act of denying an enemy a valuable resource.

The long bladed pole-arm pulled backward, bringing the Avatar of Death partially back to its feet before the weapon suddenly slipped through the Avatar's chest. The Avatar of Flame nearly lost its footing at this sudden release. The Master of Death had opened his own wound and thus had let the weapon fall out on that pull.

Now it was the Master of Death's turn to go on the offensive. One hand slammed the polearm into the ground while its clawed hand flashed out with long clawed talons and raked across the armor and flesh of the Burning One.

Where the claw touched the Burning One's flesh there were massive furrows in its armor. Between the armored segments, however, the claw dug into fiery flesh and blood like molten iron and stone poured out to hiss and bubble on the ground.

The advantage was pressed and the Master of Death got another raking blow in on the Burning One. There was a sudden flash of searing heat and Millmor felt as though his skin would boil. As Derric raised his head he tucked his massive body in under the gap and pushed with all his might.

An inch at a time, as the long moments dragged along, Derric was slowly raised into a low crouch.

Hot. Derric said to Millmor's mind. It hurts Millmor.

"I know that boy. Come! We must away!" The Ghoul King strained to move Derrick's mass. "Can you change already?"

I will try.

Meanwhile the Master of Death has been pushed back again and the blade of the Burning One screeched through the air, the shrieking sound was akin to the wailing of a tortured soul. The blade bit into flesh and scraped across hardened cold bone.

Derric's mass on Millmor's shoulders lightened ever slightly and he began dragging the slowly shrinking dragon's body away from the titanic battle and towards the walls of the City.

Meanwhile ghouls formed a ring around the pair as they slowly gained a little more speed. Helga swooped in and picked off an undead that had managed to slip through the ring of protectors.

"We shall make it out of here yet!" Millmor said.

"Absolutely not!" Magna yelled as she and her brother were being carried. Arrows fell all around them as the archers on the wall gave them cover. Magical bolts also rained down and incinerated some of the attackers.

Mortis held each of one of the twins in each arm and did not seem to be getting ready to set them down. Instead, he set forth on a jog towards the titanic battle at the rear of the undead army.

"What you are suggesting sounds far too dangerous!" She continued.

"Hah! I had thought that you would jump at the opportunity to help!" Mortis said.

His apparent humor just made Magna feel angrier. "I just got my brother back! I will not lose him again!"

There was silence from Mortis for a few seconds, he was about to say something when Adrian forestalled him. "This does not seem like the kind of thing that Adiran would have approved of. Does he know what you are planning?"

"Not the details." Mortis admitted. He sprinted through another block of undead. This was the final batch that they would have any help with from the walls. The next phalanx of undead was armed and armored but seemed to be ignoring them for now, their attention riveted on the titanic battle of the two God-Avatars.

"If your... he... if he knew exactly what I was attempting right now, then he would never have let me gone." Mortis said, finally setting the twins down on the ground.

"And why should we go along with what you are planning?" Magna demanded angrily.

"Because Magna!" Mortis retorted, somewhat angrily. "We are the royal line of Drakenspoort! Because you are the Queen-to-be. Because it is our duty to defend this Kingdom and the people who live in it! This is the way to do it!" The King Revenant drew his sword and pointed at the massive figures fighting in the distance.

Across the distance, the pair looked gigantic and the blows of their clashes echoed off the walls of the city.

The trio watched the Avatars trading blows. There was molten hot blood spilled everywhere and there was an acrid smell of the drippings of the other creature's wounds.

Magna saw that Millmor was shouldering Derrick's shrinking body, finally small enough for the Ghoul King to cradle in his arms. They were protected by the ghouls and headed back toward the city.

They looked back at the titanic struggle. "Whichever one wins shall come to claim the city." Mortis said solemnly. "One shall merge with the dead, the other shall consume their essence in a hungry fire."

"This must be stopped." Magna agreed.
