Part 84

Mortis observed the blazing Cleric before him.

Somehow, through the ages, these Knights had not quite turned out to be what he had meant them to be. They were however, quite strong.

What he found most curious is that this Robert, before him, used a spell to determine not only his intent, but his identity. Even so, the man was willing to bring up arms against Mortis.

He had issued the challenge. Robert would answer.

This matter would be concluded based on the faith of this one man.

There were not many of the corrupted clerics in the Sanctum any more. Most had been rounded up and most of the knights were with Cleric Robert.

Cedric and Jason swept through the last few corridors together, sword and shield in hand. Cedric also had a crossbow strapped to his back, but in these close confines, he preferred the blade instead.

All they needed to do was find the last pocket of Priests and either taken them into custody or kill them. The records in the Abbey said that there were around a hundred and fifty priests in the Sanctum. But this record was flase.

The Blaze Knights had captured at least two hundred priests and had killed about half again of that number.

Something is not right with that. Why would they lie about their numbers to their own records?

"Get ready." Jason said. "This should be the last room."

They formed up on either side of the doorway. On Jason's signal, they stormed it, banged it open and had their swords ready to deal with the final resistance in the building.

Their charge was met with nothing but silence. Instead of priests they found stairs. Stairs that led downward. It went down a long way, more than one storey.

At the far end of this long steep stairway there was a glow, like fire and magma. It radiated a harsh heat.

"What now?" He asked.

Jason looked at him, his eyes slightly wide. He could tell that the Sergeant was nervous, but that his training prevented him from cracking under the pressure.

"We need to go down and look."

Another wave of the undead marched towards the walls. It was time to make them burn. Mary chopped her sword through the air and the sky was filled with burning barbs.

The archers had finally been set loose. Their formations and firing patterns were a bit different than usual since they needed to light their arrows before they fired each salvo.

The undead horde ground to a halt. This torrent set up little fires as clothing and dry cadaver meat caught alight.

She took a moment to take stock of her walls. All the Lifedrinkers and Ghoulkin were on their walls and waiting. The human soldiers were exhausted and they needed to keep up their barrage of fire.

The Lifedrinkers had also begun using fire on their bolts. Their steel wire traps managed to put the undead a lot closer togther and this caused fire to spread rapidly.

She considered her tactics. What groups needed to relieve whom and who would need to go to rest? She considered what the enemy would do next. They still had a lot of things to throw at her walls.

And then, without sign, signal or warhorn, the enemy stopped their advance and attacked. The undead that was able to move were retreating outside of bowshot.

They had won the day it seemed. The human soldiers began cheering. Bowmen thrust their weapons into the sky while spearman banged their weapons into their shields.

But the cheering fell silent as they all saw what was coming over the crest of the nearby hills. Like an unending wave they churned forward on shuffling feet. The army of the Dead had more bodies on the field again.

More bodies than Mary had arrows. This was far from over.
