Hello music lovers! 🎵🎧🎵
Summer is slowly coming to an end, the tours continue but the concerts move to the halls and clubs. And there is plenty of music, especially #newtunes.
Out of this loud crowd that presents and imposes itself on us, I also chose something that has been playing in my head for a long time these days. In fact, what has stayed with me even now and I haven't forgotten.
What else did I notice when I made the selection? That there's a lot of guitar music. Of course, it varies from classical, rock to electronic guitar combinations.
These are suggestions for the weekend. You might find things you like and have something left over. But if you don't like some of them, just skip it, nothing is obligatory. 😁 🎧
Amanda Shires - Hawk For The Dove
I didn't know this girl, but when I came across her, I did a little research and, hey, this one is not just like that. In 2017, she and Jason Isbell won the Grammy Award For Best Americana Album - The Nashville sound.
This song from the new album "Take it like a man" sounds superb, especially with a female singer (Brittney Spencer) singing backing vocals.
Vieux Farka Touré et Khruangbin - Savanne
Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré released a single "Savanne" with a help of American trio Khruangbin. This song and forthcoming collaborative album 'Ali', is an homage to Vieux’s late father, Ali Farka, the pioneer of the North African “desert blues” genre.
Each Khruangbin album is inspired by a different genre, so it's easy to predict the style of this one.
Joe Satriani - The Elephants of Mars
The guitar virtuoso probably needs no introduction (at least for the members of the Music Community here). One of the best guitarists of the 1980s and 1990s, he is still tirelessly composing and publishing.
In April he released his eighteenth studio album 'The Elephants of Mars' and this is the music video for it. It's like a computer game where we rescue elephants from Mars :)
But it's just a background for the very precise and sophisticated instrumental music with which Satriani never disappoints.
Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp - Venus In Furs
Driving home from work a couple of days ago, I heard on the radio about Jeff Beck's collaboration with Johnny Depp on an album of covers of famous songs.
Jeff Beck is, for me personally, one of the best living guitarists on the planet and I got curious and immediately looked up this album at home, called "18", which had just been released.
Also, Johnny Depp is a special phenomenon...
I chose a cover of Lou Reed's 'Venus In Furs' from 1967 from the album 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'. I find it quite appropriate for #newtunes.
Billy Talent - Forgiveness 1
Billy Talent is a rock band from Ontario, Canada. They have been around for almost three decades (since 1993) unchanged. It took them a decade to get noticed by music critics and major labels and it's been uphill ever since (read: record sales in the millions).
In February this year, after a break of several years, they released their seventh studio album "Crisis Of Faith", which they composed slowly, without any urgency, during the coronation times. Their sound and style have changed over the years from rebellious punk rock to softer melodies but don't let that fool you. They still sound sharp, fast, and melodic.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Gaia
The Aussies have their third album out this year, but this song is from their 'Omnium Gatherum' album, which came out at the end of April. Gaia is a song that for me embodies all sub-genres of metal from heavy metal to death and black metal.
I put it in #newtunes because I'm a fan of the band. I recommend it, of course.
Wombo - Sour Sun
The trio from Louisville, Kentucky, USA, has a fourth album "Fairy Rust", which contemplates the space between the physicality of the land and the fluidity of imagination. Quite a different sound and style from the previous albums. Sharpened guitars, fast and repeated rhythms, together with dreamy vocals give an interesting and unique sound picture that you can't shake after repeated listens.
Daniel Rossen - Unpeopled Space
Daniel Rossen, an extraordinary guitarist, perhaps better known as a member of Grizzly Bear, one of the first indie bands, has his first solo album "You Belong There".
He demonstrates his guitar skills in this track, which is extremely complex, fluidly structured, and does not lean on generically formulated pop structures, but rather follows the inner feeling of the composer and the dynamic ripples between loud and tense and quiet and relaxed. It's almost like listening to early King Crimson. Recommended.
ugh... there's a mess ... I need to change something ... this year ... maybe 😁
... anyway, if you're curious just click the dates and listen to songs ...
