How's going? I have to admit that I only listened to guitar music very intensely last week. I do not know why. Maybe because I was reliving memories?
So here I present some guitar masters, I wouldn’t point them out that they are the best in the world (since we know who was ...), but they are definitely somewhere near the top of the most respected guitarists. At least I think so.
I hope you like the selection and if you don’t know someone you'll continue to research.
Joe Bonamassa is one of the world's top guitarists for me, and if you follow the music, you've definitely come across him. This is one of the fresher records.
Vlatko Stefanovski, Tommy Emanuel, Stochelo Rosenberg. I’ve seen these three live a few times and I have to say it’s always been fantastic. The closest to me is Vlatko Stefanovski, a Macedonian legend from the jazz-rock band Leb i Sol (Engl. Bread and Salt), who had a significant influence on musicians in the former Yugoslavia.
I first met Bill Frisell as the guitarist of John Zorn's Naked City in a live concert in Ljubljana, I think 1989. After that performance, I follow his career very often. He is still one of the leading jazz guitarists.
American guitarist and composer, he plays various genres with other musicians, including John Zorn's Masada project where I watched him live.
As I have heard, this is one of the hardest guitar pieces to play. This hypnotic riff could be listened to for hours and hours. Robert Fripps, the composer, quote about this piece:
Discipline is not an end in itself, only a means to an end.
Jerry Garcia has also collaborated a lot with other musicians, quite a bit with David Grisman. This is one of their performances, an adaptation of the Grateful Dead classic with even more pronounced guitar sounds.
Jorma Kaukonen, first with Jefferson Airplane in the early years, later solo as Hot Tuna, is still an active guitarist. He is best known for this piece, there are countless versions, this one is one of the better ones for me.
As a teenager, I wanted to fly like an eagle, ah. But I didn’t have that luck to see Steve Miller live. Maybe I would really fly then.
In the end, these three guitar masters I saw playing live together. Tango and jazz. Unforgettable.
Listen loud!
