Share Our World: Lincoln Memorial

DC is is full of awesome memorials.

Yesterday I highlighted the Jefferson Memorial today I will highlight the Lincoln Memorial. In the post about the Jefferson Memorial you can see the Washington Monument really well.

George Washington was the 1st president
Thomas Jefferson the 3rd president
Abraham Lincoln the 16th president

The Lincoln Memorial was built 1914-1922 and like the Jefferson is also built in a neoclassical design with the columns. Inside it a huge (10 feet (3.0 m) high, 16 feet (4.9 m) wide, and 17 feet (5.2 m) deep) statue of Abraham Lincoln.

Similar to the Jefferson Memorial there are some of Lincoln's writings on the wall, the Gettysburg Address and his 2nd inaugural address. With so many people around we didn't stay to read the words.

Above his head it says,

In this temple as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the union the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.

I really like the view you have of both the Lincoln and the view to the Washington Monument.

The Lincoln Memorial is famous for people giving speeches on the steps and the most famous being Martin Luther King. They have an inscription on the ground marking the places Martin Luther King stood when he gave that speech to about 250,000 people.

It says,

I Have A Dream
Martin Luther King Jr.
The march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom
August 28, 1963

There is so much history and beautiful architecture and symbolism all over DC and the Lincoln Memorial is one place that is full of all of it.

I used to work at George Washington University and I remember a few times walking from my office to the Lincoln Memorial. It is a special place.
