Wednesday Walk: Central Park

I am so excited to take you on a walk in Central Park.

The Central Park Conservancy has a great self guided tour that Jodi and I went on while we were in the park. I highly recommend it! I have been in and through central park many times and this time it really came to life this time as I learned all about what I was seeing. I feel this way about museums too...go on the tours!

Strawberry Fields

We came into the Park at 72nd West and our first stop was Strawberry Fields. It is a living landscape memorial to the singer John Lennon and is across from the Dakota (apartment buildings) where he and Yoko Ono lived. Yono Ono asked for donations in the form of plants and stones from all over the world and architect Bruce Kelly worked to incorporated them into his design. 1

There is a mosaic with the word Imagine. We didn't see it. Here is Imagine by John Lennon as background music as you tour Central Park.

I learned there are also memorials to Duke Ellington, Victor Herbert and Beethoven in the park.

Here is a map of Central Park and the route we took

The Lake

Our next stop on the tour was The Lake. It is my favorite place we stopped.

There were great views of the buildings and the water.

We learned that they used to skate on the lake in the winter time. The first part of Central Park to open was the lake in 1858. It is estimated that on Christmas morning of that year, an estimated 8,000 people showed up to skate on the newly opened 20 acre Lake. 2

The Ramble

The next place we came to was the ramble. It was super cool and felt like we were in a forest.

The Ramble is 36 acres of winding paths, trails, rustic bridges, streams and rocks and thick trees and plants. It was inspired by the the woodlands of the Catskills and Adirondacks to give people the opportunity to experience nature right within the park. 3

Obelisk

When we came around the corner and saw the obelisk we knew we had to go and check it out. What is this ancient Egyptian stone doing in Central Park?

It is also called Cleopatra's Needle and was erected first in Egypt in 1600 BC. It was then moved to Alexandria in 12 BC by the Romans. And in 1881 it was presented by Egypt to the city of New York. It weighs 220 tons and it took over a year to move it from Egypt to New York. 4

Translation of part of the hieroglyphics

The Horus, Strong- Bull-Son-of-Ra, the King of Upper and Lower Egypt,
User- maat-ra, Chosen-of-Ra, he of the Two Goddesses,
Protector-of-Egypt-and-curber-of- foreign-lands, the Son of Ra,
Ramesses Beloved-of- Amun, A king excellent like Ra,

I was so happy to see that it was right next to the MET and you can see it reflected in the museums windows.

The Great Lawn

Here is a quick look at the Great lawn. There are six softball fields. People also play others sports, picnic, go to concerts and performances on the Great Lawn.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir

The is the biggest body of water in Central Park it is 106 acres and reaches 40 feet deep and holds more than one billion gallons of water! That is amazing.
It was built between 1858 and 1862. It was named for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1994 to honors her contributions to the city. 6

There were many people walking around the Reservoir, it would make a great walking path for those that live in the city and want to walk in nature with all the trees and water.

Central park is huge (843 acres) and there is so much to explore. This little walk/ tour took us 2 hours and we only saw and learned about 6 things in the park. Simply amazing!

Look at how much more there is to explore.
