Share Our World: Ohio River walk

Recently, I went to Cincinnati, Ohio for a work conference. It was my first time there and I was pleasantly surprised. My friend Sara came from Oxford, Ohio to visit. The first night we went on a walk along the Ohio River.

There is a beautiful Women's Committee garden and green areas by the bridge.

And here is a good shot of Kentucky, across the river.

In this map you can see how the Ohio river separates Ohio and Kentucky.

Bridges

There were lots of bridges in this area to cross back and forth from Kentucky and Ohio.

John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge

The Roebling Suspension Bridge is wonderful. It looks like the Brooklyn Bridge and was done by the same architect. It is a car and pedestrian bridge. Next time I want to walk across it.

John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge was opened December 1, 1866, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,057 feet (322 m) main span, which was later overtaken by John A. Roebling's most famous design of the 1883 Brooklyn Bridge at 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m).

Here is a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge from my visit in 2019. You can see the same signature cables.

Queen City

Cincinnati is known as the Queen City or Queen of the west as it was a popular city in the early 1800s.

Sports

There are many sports teams in Cincinnati with the Bangles (Football) and Reds (baseball) being the most popular.

I grew up with a mother who enjoyed baseball. So I got a picture of the Reds sign and stadium.

Path

The path along the river was really nice. We saw some electric scooters and thought it would be fun to scooter this path. So we did on the way back. It was so much fun!

History

Along the path we found this statue and plaque that talk about how Cincinnati was named.

The plaque says,

Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus
Circa 458 BC
The Legendary Roman is seen here after he had defeated the Acquians and recued the trapped Roman army. With one hand he returns the fasces, symbol of power as appointed dictator of Rome. His other hand holds the plow. As he resumes the life of a citizen and farmer.
Our city was named in 1790 by Govenor Arthur St. Clair, member of the Society of the Cincinnati, an order of revolutionary war officers whose first president was George Washington.
Given to the city, to honor the volunteer spirit of the citizen-soldier, Cincinnatus, by members and friends of the Cincinnatus association. 1984

Selfies

Sara and Sara getting selfies!

So glad that Sara suggested this walk. The walk along the river, the dinner at Montgomery Inn and the electric scooter rides made for a wonderful night.
