Share Our World: 3 small gardens in Manhattan

On my recent trip to New York City I discovered a bunch of small gardens as we were walking down the busy street. They range from very small to a couple of acres.

I love Gardens! So let me show you three of them.

This shot reminds me of @photovisions post Nature as an Artist... gallery. Look at that awesome shading.

Jane Street Garden

The first garden that I noticed was the Jane Street Garden. It was very small.
I found out that it is a NYC Green Thumb community garden and it is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays 10-6pm. Luckily we were walking by on Wednesday. 1

Abingdon Square Garden

The Abingdon Square is a bigger garden at .022 acres. It is one of the oldest parks in New York City and was established in 1836. 2

The garden has lots of different trees and plants. The best thing was seeing the people sitting in the park. It was around lunch time and I could imagine it being such a great spot to go for a lunch break or for tourists (like us) that needed a break from all the walking.

We didn't stop, we were on a trek to the south of the island.

Burrow Street Garden

The Burrow Street Garden was the next garden we saw and the biggest and the most beautiful. You could really forget you were in the city.

According the website,

The garden is two-thirds of an acre of walks, lawns, and a fine collection plants, trees and flowers. The first verifiable planting in the Gardens at St. Luke’s was in 1842: a tiny slip taken from England’s famous Glastonbury thorn. The thorn survived until 1990, when it was blown over in a windstorm. Its progeny lives on in the North garden. In the 1950’s Barbara Leighton created the Barrow Street Garden, after buildings on the site were razed. In 1985 the gardens were expanded under the directorship of Deborah Peterson. 3

I have been to the New York Botanical Garden, which is amazing and so big (250 acres) and Central Park which is enormous (843 acres).

This was the first time I noticed these small gardens. I really like them. They have a personal and community feel and they are right in the city.
