Yesterday I went out for my long run of the week. As part of my training plan, I coordinated with my wife and some friends to run the well-known La Gloria route, a course of about 14 kilometers that I really enjoy. It’s a challenging but very scenic route, because from the start to the turnaround point there are gradual inclines that help build strength, endurance, and focus.
We set out highly motivated, chatting and enjoying the atmosphere. However, after about 1.5 kilometers, I started to feel discomfort in my knee. At first, I thought about continuing at a slow pace, but I decided to listen to my body and not take any risks. Although I really wanted to complete the route, I understood that health comes before any workout or distance.
For that reason, I cut the run short and decided to stay in the city to run 8 kilometers on flat terrain. Changing the plan wasn’t easy—because you always want to stick to what you set out to do—but learning to make good decisions is also part of the process. Sometimes, training smart means lowering the intensity, adjusting the route, or simply stopping.
In the end, I completed those 8 kilometers at a leisurely pace, trying to maintain a comfortable rhythm and paying attention to how my knee felt.
Running also teaches us to be patient, to listen to our bodies, and to understand that not every day is the same. The important thing is to finish in good condition.
