Saludos y Bendiciones Runners.
Greetings and blessings, runners.
Sunday—the day of the week’s long run. Early in the morning, I got ready with my hydration and snacks for the week’s long run. I coordinated with some teammates to go for a group run, since my husband was working out of town, and long runs are always better in a group. When I arrived at the meeting spot, only one teammate had shown up; some had messaged in the group chat to say they wouldn’t be coming. Without waiting too long, we set off since the temperatures were quite high, and today we had more kilometers to cover. Since it had rained very hard the day before, we took a route that wouldn’t be affected by the rain—a great route because it has a bit of everything, and we do a full loop instead of returning the same way. For me, this route is ideal for mental training since it’s quite long when you do the full loop.
The first few kilometers went smoothly; I was chatting with my running partner. The first 5 kilometers of this route are uphill, reaching a maximum elevation gain of 120 meters. These first 5 kilometers are the most physically demanding; then comes the descent and some false flats. The last 5 kilometers are the toughest—but for the mind—since the sun is beating down harder by then, it’s later in the day, and the body is already more worn out, with energy levels having dropped significantly.
My heart rate spiked a lot during the last few kilometers, so I lowered my intensity until it stabilized. It was a very good workout—in the end, it totaled 14.5 kilometers. I thanked my running partner for keeping an eye on me during the run; even though he was running at a different pace toward the end and was ahead of me, he always turned around to check on me. This route is on my list of ones I absolutely must master.
