Cycling Under the Hazy Sky of Marsiling and a Warm Bak Kut Teh Dinner
Yesterday, I visited a friend of mine around the Marsiling area, and after spending some time chatting and catching up, I decided that I wasn't ready to go home yet. The night was still young, and of course, whenever I have some free time and there is a bicycle nearby, cycling is always going to be one of my choices LOL.
There was something very different about the atmosphere that evening though.
The sky was covered by a thick haze, and everything around me looked slightly mysterious. Usually, the night views around Singapore are quite clear, with bright streetlights, buildings, trees, and roads easily visible. But that night, the haze softened almost everything in the distance.
The bright lights around the area created this interesting glowing effect. Some of the floodlights looked like they were shining through fog, and the whole place suddenly had a completely different mood.
Looking at my photos, you might even think that Singapore suddenly became a cold country covered in mist LOL.
Of course, haze isn't exactly something I would wish for, but since I was already outside, I decided to appreciate the unusual scenery in front of me.
So I continued cycling around Marsiling.
One thing I really enjoy about cycling is that I don't always have to follow a strict route. Sometimes I just keep going until I notice something interesting. Whenever I saw a nice view, an unusual angle, or some beautiful lighting, I would stop the bicycle for a moment and take a few photos.
The haze actually gave some of my night photos a very cinematic feeling.
The trees looked darker, while the strong lights in the background created a soft glamour glow. Even some ordinary roads and pathways suddenly looked dramatic. There were moments when I stopped simply because I liked how the light was passing through the hazy air.
Before I realized it, I had already been cycling for more than 30 minutes.
And you probably already know what happens after cycling for a while...
I got hungry! 😂
Luckily, I was near Marsiling Food Centre, so I decided to look for something warm and satisfying for dinner. With the hazy atmosphere outside and the night feeling a little different than usual, I suddenly craved something with a nice hot soup.
Bak Kut Teh sounded perfect!
I ordered a bowl of Bak Kut Teh together with rice, braised peanuts, and preserved vegetables.
The soup was light but flavorful, and drinking something warm after cycling was incredibly satisfying. The pork ribs were also delicious and looked really generous. The meat was tender, and together with the warm soup and rice, it felt like the perfect meal after my little night adventure.
I also really enjoyed the side dishes.
The braised peanuts had that rich savory flavor, while the preserved vegetables tasted refreshing and helped balance the heavier taste of the pork. I liked alternating between a spoonful of rice, some Bak Kut Teh, and then a little bit of the side dishes.
Simple food, but very satisfying!
What started as a casual visit to a friend eventually turned into another small cycling and food adventure. That's what I enjoy about wandering around the city—sometimes you don't need an elaborate plan. A bicycle, an unusual night atmosphere, a few interesting photos, and a warm meal can already make the evening memorable.
See you in my next adventure, and bon appétit!
