Hello everyone! I'm a little late in sharing this food adventure because this was supposed to be my post last Saturday. Anyway, better late than never, right? LOL
Last Saturday, I went cycling around the Upper Boon Keng area, and as usual, I ended up getting hungry after my cycling session. Although I didn't cycle a very long distance, I still felt quite tired because I was wearing a face mask throughout my ride.
If you're wondering why I was wearing a mask while cycling, I actually shared about it in one of my previous posts. It's because of the thick haze that has been affecting our city lately.
Unfortunately, this is something that we experience almost every year. At this point, we're already used to it and have somehow accepted that it's going to happen again and again. That's just how things are here, I guess. LOL
Anyway, enough about the haze! Let's talk about something more enjoyable, which is FOOD!
For my lunch, I decided to revisit a newly discovered hawker stall called Jiak Song, which specializes in Mee Hoon Kway and Fish Soup.
Based on their posters and menu, they don't seem to be newcomers in the food industry. However, I believe they're relatively new to this hawker food center because I don't remember seeing them during my visit a few weeks ago.
Or maybe I simply didn't notice them? Haha!
What caught my attention was their selection of fish soup dishes. They looked delicious, and more importantly, they seemed like a healthier option because of the generous amount of vegetables and the light soup.
For this visit, I ordered their #11 Mixed Fish Soup with Rice, which costs SGD 7.50.
One thing that I specifically requested was for them not to add milk to the soup. I prefer the plain broth because I want to appreciate the natural flavors of the ingredients.
I know that some people enjoy their fish soup with milk because it makes the broth richer and creamier. However, I'm more on the simpler side when it comes to food.
Sometimes, the simpler the dish is, the more I can appreciate its authentic taste.
And I'm glad that I made that choice!
The soup was light yet flavorful, and I really enjoyed how the different ingredients contributed to its overall taste.
The highlight for me was the combination of fresh sliced fish and fried fish.
The fresh fish had a soft and flaky texture that made it enjoyable to eat. Meanwhile, the fried fish offered something different because of its seasoned batter, which added another layer of flavor and texture to the dish.
I really appreciate this kind of combination because it makes a simple bowl of soup more interesting.
Another ingredient that I enjoyed was the generous serving of shredded cabbage!
I'm a huge fan of cabbage in soup dishes because it absorbs the broth while adding a subtle sweetness and a pleasant texture. Together with the tomato slices, it made the soup feel refreshing and well-balanced.
I also liked the addition of the crispy golden toppings, which soaked up some of the flavorful broth.
And of course, the bowl of white rice was the perfect companion to complete my lunch.
Overall, this meal is definitely a winner for me!
I enjoyed the simplicity of the broth, the variety of fish textures, and the generous serving of vegetables. It was satisfying without feeling overly heavy, which was exactly what I wanted after my cycling session.
This is another reminder of why I enjoy exploring hawker food centers around Singapore. Sometimes, the best food experiences come from simple and affordable meals rather than fancy restaurants.
I'm definitely looking forward to returning to Jiak Song to try their other dishes!
Bon Appétit!
