Maledictus Terra Book 2: Sanguifex Part 86

Greetings All

I hope your week has been spectacular. The weather has been all over the show and we've had rain and scorching days, very weird for this time of year in the Cape. Wonder what that will mean for our winter.

Anyway, ensure that you have read @zakludick's update before you get started on today's update.

Magna had had enough. She was done with everything of the last year. She wanted to go back to being a spoiled brat in the palace and not have to worry about magic, monsters, and ridiculous time travel disasters.

She rapidly stepped forward across the ruined magic circle and grabbed her brother’s arm to pull him behind her and towards the sphere of magic. She gave him one look and he knew what it was she wanted from him. However, he had no way to do what it was she needed him to do.

That’s when something was thrown at him by the man he truly believed was his uncle. Fumbling, he caught what appeared to be a glass vial. He knew what this was and knew how he could use it.

The true Adiran grinned at him and then squared off against the imposter together with Magna and Mortis. Adrian wanted to check on Lucien, but he knew they were short of time. Instead, he hurriedly muttered a protective spell over himself and stepped toward the sphere of power.

“No!” Screamed the imposter as he brought more magic to his hands just as Adrian brought the vial to the sphere.

Derric, Sebastian, and Trix fought as hard as they could but the Hungers’ numbers were more than they could have even imagined. It didn’t help matters that the elk bugle was starting to scream within their heads. The beast was just beyond the open doors of the church and soon it would be upon them.

Fresh blood joined the blood of the fallen Hungers and the three knew that they didn’t have much more time. If the magic upstairs had failed, then this mission had all been for nothing, and they were going to be ripped to shreds.

Then the forcefield that had been protecting the staircase shattered. Its energies tore through the Hungers but did not touch the battling party. It was a brief respite, but not for long as the Hungers beyond the doors were still coming.
Above them, a door slammed open, and Adrian was seen sprinting from the room and down the stairs. He narrowly managed to duck under a blast of black magic and managed to stumble down the stairs. Derric rushed forward to prevent the prince from shattering his neck.

“Get me to her!” shouted the prince as he pulled himself upright against Derric’s new form.

Derric partially dropped to the ground and allowed Adrian to climb onto his back.

Hold on for dear life.

“Are you insane!” screamed Sebastian.

“Clear a path for me!” ordered Adrian.

Trix didn’t hesitate and as she used the shadows to cut a swath through the horrors before them, Sebastian felt compelled to follow. There was nothing else for it. The boy had his mother’s authoritarian voice. Sebastian breathed out what fear had gathered in his chest and barrelled toward the entrance.

Adrian gripped Derric’s neck as he bolted toward the opening. The prince just had to get to the elk, that was all he needed to do. Derric sprinted passed several hungers and jumped over a few more before he skidded to a halt. Adrian heard a snort come from him and he looked up. There was a wall of Hungers that surrounded the elk. It was clear it was taking no chances and Derric wouldn’t get through that defence without killing himself.

Adrian swallowed his fear and slid from Derric’s back. Derric immediately tried to snap his teeth around the boy’s collar but missed as Adrian ducked.
“I have to do this!” he said as he ran toward the horrors.

Your sister’s going to kill me!

Adrian laughed, despite terror blooming in his heart. If anything had gone wrong with the spell, he was dead. There was no chance he would get away without being torn limb from limb. He held the vial before him, and the Hungers stopped their advance.

The elk screamed at them, and they scattered, running around Adrian toward the church and Derric. He knew the creature didn’t trust them but was desperate for a cure. Terrified, Adrian stepped forward to hold the vial out toward the creature.
Thick globs of decaying flesh fell from the beast as it stepped forward to sniff the prince and the token he held in his hand. True, it smelled of rich magic, but the globes of glass that dissolved her people had also smelled of magic. She couldn’t trust the vial and she couldn’t trust the child before her. He stank of fear and magic. There would only be one way to see if this was the token the Lifedrinker had promised her.

The elk’s maw stretched to an impossible size, making Adrian regret doing any of this. He wished he was still in the castle with few worries. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and stepped within the maw.

The magic battle raged in the church. The imposter had shrieked his disdain when the boy had managed to capture the vortex of magic and bolted like a coward. He would have followed, had his counterpart not sealed the room the moment the boy ran from it. While there would be other ways to get what he wanted, this had been the easiest and he had fallen into their plans so easily. If only his memories had been returned earlier and if only the damn Lifedrinker hadn’t suspected him. The rune burned into his flesh was unaffected by his healing magic and it sealed a good portion of his powers away. It would be difficult to beat those within the room but not impossible. And that was when Rhys snuck up on him and sank all his teeth into his right leg, resulting in a sickening tearing sound.
