Hi, everyone. If you ask me what the best race I’ve ever run was, I’d say today’s. Basically because it was the race I enjoyed the most. Let me tell you why.
It was a charity race where the entry fee consisted of donating medicine for people affected by the crisis in La Guaira. The nature of the race alone made it special. But on top of that, right from the start, they told us that the maximum pace would be 8 minutes per kilometer—a very easy pace for most runners. The idea was that we could take photos, record videos, and chat with the other runners. That’s something you can hardly do in an official race where the top finishers win prizes.
On top of all this, today I was able to run for the first time with two friends. One of them walked the entire course, while the other jogged the full 5 kilometers without stopping. I was pleasantly surprised by her physical and mental stamina to do so without any training and even without getting much sleep the night before.
My plan was to stay with her for as long as she kept jogging, and it turned out we completed the race from start to finish. Our total time was just under 48 minutes, and we covered 5.5 kilometers.
I’m so happy to share my passion for running with people who are special to me. And I’m also glad to have participated in a race where the grand prize goes to those most in need in La Guaira.
I’ll end this post with a quote that sums up this race perfectly: “Today we set aside competitiveness to embrace solidarity.”
