Heretic is a high-voltage psychological thriller that aims to be considered a horror film; however, the plot unfolds through suspense and tension between the characters. The key to the film lies in Hugh Grant's performance, who, with his charisma and unique expressions, exponentially transforms into the sinister and manipulative villain. So, if you want to see this actor's performance elevated to another level, you have to give this film a chance. Furthermore, his co-stars are equally impressive; Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) perform superbly alongside Grant.

The film's plot revolves around the evangelistic work of two young women tasked with spreading their Mormon faith in a suburban neighborhood. They decide to visit the enigmatic Mr. Reed, played by Grant. What begins as a social visit to evangelize the man and try to convince him to join their religion takes a dramatic turn. Grant, who initially appears friendly and genuinely interested in listening to the women, quickly shifts to a pattern of psychological manipulation, forcing them into a game of cat and mouse.
La trama del film gira en torno a una labor evangelizadora de parte de estas dos chicas, quienes est谩n encargadas de esparcir su fe mormona en un vecindario suburbano. Es all铆 cuando deciden visitar al enigm谩tico Sr. Reed interpretado por Grant. Y lo que empieza como una visita social para evangelizar a este hombre y tratar de convencerlo para que se una a su religi贸n, la trama toma un giro importante ya que Grant quien se mostr贸 amable en un inicio y con un inusual inter茅s en escuchar a estas chicas, cambia de actitud a una manipulaci贸n psicol贸gica impresionante oblig谩ndolas a sentirse como si jugaran al gato y el rat贸n.
And yes, the plot intensifies as the film progresses, raising the tension between each of the characters. At a certain point, the girls begin to understand that their lives are at risk and that every decision they make could have fatal consequences. What I liked most about this is that Grant keeps his character so engrossed in questioning each of these girls' religious beliefs that it makes you realize everything is coldly calculated. His house is nothing more than a giant mousetrap to lure people like them and use them as guinea pigs in an experiment he himself devised.
Y s铆, la trama se intensifica conforme avanza la pel铆cula, subiendo el nivel de tensi贸n entre cada uno de los personajes. Y en cierto punto las chicas comienzan a entender que su vida est谩 en riesgo y que cada decisi贸n que tomen puede tener consecuencias fatales. Y lo que m谩s me gust贸 de esto es que Grant mantiene su personaje tan enfrascado en cuestionar cada una de las creencias religiosas de estas chicas que te da a entender que todo est谩 fr铆amente calculado. Su casa no es m谩s que una trampa gigante de ratones para atraer personas as铆 y usarlas como conejitos de indias en un experimento que 茅l mismo se invent贸.
Grant always wants to be right and demands that these girls question him. His intellect is impressive, and he makes these young women doubt what they preach. And Grant doesn't just question them; he makes the viewer doubt and question as well. This is what I liked most about the whole film. And of course, seeing Grant playing a villain was wonderful. I expected nothing less from him, and he completely exceeded my expectations after being used to seeing him in romantic comedies.
Grant busca siempre tener la raz贸n y les exige a estas chicas que lo cuestionen. Su intelecto es impresionante y hace que estas j贸venes duden de lo que predican. Y Grant no s贸lo las cuestiona sino que hace que quien ve la pel铆cula tambi茅n dude y se cuestione. Esto es lo que m谩s me gust贸 de todo el film. Y por supuesto que ver a Grant trabajando como un villano fue maravilloso. No esperaba menos de 茅l y cubri贸 mis expectativas por completo luego de estar acostumbrado a verlo en pel铆culas rom谩nticas o de comedia.
But despite the outstanding performances of these great artists, some critics have expressed that the film lacked suspense and became predictable at times. I, for one, disagree with this opinion. I liked the ending because it's open, leaving it up to the viewer to create their own conclusion. Another criticism is that the religious and social themes introduced at the beginning of the film aren't deep enough to keep the audience engaged. I imagine they did this to avoid harsher criticism from devout believers. However, as I said, I disagree with both of these speculations, since the film addresses the subject matter as it should be.
Pero a pesar de las actuaciones ofrecidas por estos grandes artistas, existen algunos cr铆ticos que expresan que el film careci贸 de fuerza en el suspenso y en alg煤n momento se volvi贸 predecible. Yo por mi parte difiero de esta opini贸n. Su final me agrad贸 porque queda abierto y queda de parte del espectador darle el cierre que desee. Otro aspecto que critican es que el tema religioso y social que se toca al inicio del film no es lo suficientemente profundo para mantener interesada a la audiencia. Imagino que quisieron hacerlo as铆 para evitar cr铆ticas m谩s negativas por parte de personas que son fieles creyentes en su religi贸n. Sin embargo, como les dije, yo difiero de ambas especulaciones puesto que la pel铆cula aborda el tema como debe ser.
