On January 1st, Roberth Eggers' remake of Nosferatu was released in Venezuela, and I, with nothing to do, went to see this film that was one of my most anticipated of last year. A film that from its idea and concept is already a spectacle, due to the fact that he is one of the most interesting directors of the last decade and by bringing to theaters a story that has more than a century of having been released, this becomes not only an interesting experiment but also a feat that not any director could do. But Robert Eggers is not just any director, and he didn't have a normal cast either, as his stars included Bill Skargard, Lily Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Willem Dafoe.
Before going to see the new Nosferatu I wanted to see its original version, the 1922 one, and the truth is that thinking well the whole context of the film, it is understandable how it became such an important icon in the history of cinema. A film that is more than 100 years old and looks like that is undoubtedly a masterpiece, but, truth be told, as times have changed, despite watching it with admiration, I could not enjoy it well. However, bringing that story back to life is something that Roberth Eggers does to perfection, because you can tell that he not only greatly admires the original story, but also abhors the cinema of today, which makes Nosferatu an ode to folklore, vampire cinema and gothic horror.
The fact that Roberth Eggers abhors both modern day vampires and modern day cinema is no accident in making Nosferatu. This film has been one of Roberth Eggers' dreams for quite some time, and you can tell he understood the story from beginning to end. For those who don't know what Nosferatu is about, it is basically the story of Dracula with one or two differences due to copyright issues, and along with that we also add some customs and rituals that were common given the time and beliefs.
But what did I think of the movie? The truth is that I loved the movie, and I can't think of a better first day of the year, or at least, a movie that I would have liked to see more this January 1st. What Lily Rose Depp does with her body and features is something I don't recall ever seeing in an actress, which is amazing not only because of the actress' superb work, but because of the fact that the entire cast is on par with that performance. While the direction is perfect in telling a folkloric and gothic tale, everything comes together like a Swiss watch to create an experience as close to a tale from hundreds of centuries ago as possible, with the rawness that today's cinema allows.
