Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

How are you?
Nothing particularly new here. You can tell summer is slowly coming to an end only because the nights are a little cooler than last month. And it’s a little more humid because of the short daily showers. I spent the whole day lazing around today. I read a book, took the dog for a walk, and that was it. Now it’s time for a beer (or two). #beersaturday, and that’s...

I have two cans in front of me, one Czech and one Irish; I’ll happily empty them and share the beer experience with you!

🍻 😎 🍻

First, the one with less alcohol.

Bakalář Pale Lager

alt

Brewed by Tradiční pivovar, Rakovník, Czech Republic.
Bottle, 0.5 l, alcohol 4.0% ABV, IBU 26. Pale lager style.

What do the Master Brewers say?

A lighter beer of golden color, nicely bitter and well-balanced in taste. As with all our beers, it is brewed using traditional methods and matured for several weeks in lager tanks. It has a clean character and is easy to drink – ideal for everyday enjoyment.

This is the first time I've had a beer from this brewery. From what I've read, the brewery is quite old—it's been around since 1454—and they still ferment in open vats, using Saaz hops and their own water.

alt

The beer is clear and golden; the head is average and fades quickly. It doesn’t have any distinctive aroma. It goes down smoothly; at first I taste malt and a hint of bread, followed immediately by the bitterness of the hops, which lingers in the aftertaste.

alt

A drinkable and refreshing beer!
It isn’t sweet, it isn’t flat, it’s balanced and decent, but it isn’t complex. An honest Czech beer with the character of a classic lager—undoubtedly better than industrial lagers, but nothing special. Due to its lower alcohol content (lagers usually range from 4.8% to 5.5%), it’s suitable as a daily refreshment. It’s not available in local stores; I bought it at E-Leclerc for €2.30.

Guinness West Indies Porter

alt

Brewed by Guinness, Dublin, Ireland.
Bottle, 0.5 l, alcohol 6.0% ABV, IBU 50. Porter-style beer.

What do the Master Brewers say?

A group of enterprising brewers on a quest to explore new recipes reinterpret old ones and collaborate freely to bring exciting beers to life. A style with origins from our brewers' diaries dating back to 1801, West Indies Porter is complex yet mellow, hoppy with notes of toffee and chocolate.

It’s praised as one of the better Guinness-style beers.

alt

The beer is dark brown, almost black; the head is average and slightly creamy, less so than a Guinness Draught, and light brown. It has a slight chocolate aroma.
It goes down smoothly; on the palate, I detect roasted malt, dark chocolate, and even a hint of coffee, with a hint of bitterness in the background. In the finish, there’s a pronounced hop bitterness that lingers.

alt

A drinkable and tasty beer!
A porter brewed according to a traditional recipe from 1801, designed for long sea voyages, with more hops and a higher alcohol content. Strong, yet very drinkable. It’s not as creamy as a Drought, but it’s richer, hoppier, and more flavorful. It’s not available locally here; I found it at a Leclerc store for €3.99.

And what am I listening to when writing this and tasting beer? Something from my Friday's #newtunes.
