How are you?
The sun, the heat, and a gentle warm breeze - the locals call it the jugo - here on the island. The perfect vacation vibe for a cold beer, some music, or a book.
Of course, I’m sitting in the shade with a cold beer in my hand, because it’s #beersaturday.
And I have two interesting beers in this sunny and thirsty afternoon at the island of Pag, one Slovenian and one Croatian can!
I’m ready to empty them and share the experience with you.
Let’s go!
🍻 😎 🍻
Brewed by Green Gold Brewing, Žalec, Slovenia.
Can, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.1% ABV, IBU 30. American Pale Ale style.
What do the Master Brewers say?
This pale and clear ale is brewed with homegrown Styrian Wolf hops from Slovenia and American Mosaic hops, which impart a fruity and hoppy aroma that is fresh and inviting. The fruity notes of the hops complement the lightness of the beer, making it a perfect choice for a warm summer day or a relaxing evening. Overall, Sunset Pale Ale is a delicious and refreshing beer that is perfect for any occasion. Its lightness, fruity and hoppy aroma, and balanced taste make it a must-try for any beer enthusiast.
🍺
The beer is a bright orange color, with very little head that dissipates quickly. It has a herbal aroma. It goes down smoothly, and on the palate I detect a pleasant hoppy bitterness, along with nuances of sweet tropical fruit—mostly citrus and grapefruit.
The hoppy bitterness lingers in the aftertaste for a while.
Very drinkable and refreshing!
A simple, refreshing beer with a subtle citrus aroma and a hint of herbs, without being overly complex. Perfect for any hot summer day or evening. It’s occasionally available in local stores, priced at around €1.80.
🍻 😎 🍻
Brewed by The Garden Brewery, Zagreb, Croatia.
Can, 0.33 l, alcohol 6.0% ABV, IBU 15. New England / Hazy IPA beer.
What do the Master Brewers say?
Juicy, tropical and resinous with notes of Pineapple and Papaya
The Garden is one of Croatia's best breweries, and they know how to brew great hazy IPAs, so I have no doubt it will be delicious.
The beer is a clear yellow color; the head is average and fades quickly. It smells of tropical fruits. It goes down smoothly. In my mouth, I taste a mild bitterness from the hops that gives way to aromas of tropical fruits - especially mango, pineapple, and maybe even papaya, though I haven’t tried papaya yet, so I’m not sure :)
The aftertaste fades quickly.
A very drinkable, juicy, and refreshing beer!
It’s not that bitter, less hoppy than the previous one, more fruity but still refreshing. Suitable for anyone who can’t handle bitter IPA styles very intensely. Perfect for summer and the beach - I’d have another one right away, but in this heat you have to be careful; it’s 6% ABV, and those fruity aromas can easily fool you.
It’s not available locally, but here in Croatia you can find it in almost every store.
🍻 😎 🍻
And what am I listening to when writing this and tasting beer? Something from Friday's #newtunes, an excellent live performance by Nothing But Thieves.
Nothing But Thieves - Stray Dogs (Live at Finsbury Park)
You may have also noticed that I even have a book :)
After a long time, I’m holding Hyperion in my hands again - Dan Simmons’s incredibly epic science fiction saga. It won the Locus and Hugo Awards way back in 1990. I read it in Serbian about a year after it came out, and last year it was finally published in Slovenian as well - I got this copy from the library. I’m reading it again and once more realizing just what an extraordinary visionary Dan Simmons was - and what a vivid imagination he had. Twenty-six years ago, he was already writing about a global space network and instantaneous leaps through time and space.
Thank you for your attention.
