English Version
My neighborhood is called San Agustín, like the saint. It belongs to the municipality La Lisa, in Havana, and it is the place I walk the most every day. I grew up here and I keep walking here every day, observing how time has left its mark on the streets and on the buildings. It is a space I know by heart.
At another time this neighborhood was cleaner, with buildings painted in bright colors and cared-for streets. The passing of the years and the economic difficulties have made everything deteriorate little by little, the broken streets, the discolored walls, and the facades without maintenance. Even so, it is the place where I have lived most of the time, and I always find some beauty in the middle of the everyday.
What I like the most is the vegetation that remains in every corner. In my walks there always appears some detail of nature that surprises me, leafy trees, flowers that grow in the gardens, and even wild parrots that fly over the area, something not common in the city. I have not managed to photograph them well because I would need more professional equipment, but I still enjoy every time I hear them and see them fly.
The community also has its charm. Here most of the people know each other, greet each other, and share stories. It is a neighborhood where that custom of talking on the sidewalk is preserved, of helping the neighbor and of maintaining a certain closeness that in other places perhaps has already been lost.
But despite the problems and the deterioration, my neighborhood continues being part of me. Each walk reminds me that although the environment changes, there is always something interesting to value, and this almost always is found in the simple and in what seems to go unnoticed. I always find a reason to keep connected with this place.
Cheers, and until next time!
