¿Está ganando el odio…? | Is hate winning...?

Ocupado en mis asuntos me sorprende el mensaje de Twitter, habla de una noticia en desarrollo, un tiroteo en una escuela de los Estados Unidos. Posteriormente se revelarían los detalles de tan triste acontecimiento.

Lo primero que me sorprende es la edad del atacante, un muchacho de apenas dieciocho años es capaz de cometer un acto tan incomprensible: ¿por qué alguien puede cometer un asesinato masivo como ese, contra menores indefensos, con una frialdad que demuestra ser hecho por una persona inteligente y meticulosa…?

No me atrevo a conjeturar ninguna afirmación concluyente, es un tema en el que cualquier hipótesis que se pueda esgrimir puede ser perfectamente rebatida con argumentos de mucho peso.

Si me atrevo a pensar que Salvador Ramos, como se llamaba el atacante, un joven al parecer bastante normal, con actividades normales, como las de muchos jóvenes de su edad, quizá alimentó un odio tan grande como para producir un atentado a todas luces inútil, puesto que no habría forma de obtener con él ningún tipo de beneficio, ni político, ni económico, ni ideológico. Quizá su rabia contra el mundo fue tan grande que solo pensó en desquitarse, pero sobre esto no voy a ahondar.

Un asunto que siempre me pasa cuando ocurren estos lamentables acontecimientos es preguntarme por qué nos seguimos sorprendiendo, por qué nos crea tanta repulsión este tipo de acontecimientos. Un sentimiento que es compartido por mucha gente en el mundo, baste para ello revisar los portales noticiosos de la prensa mundial, el sentimiento de tristeza, de repudio, de sorpresa ante tal acto de barbarie es abrumadoramente mayoritario.

Pienso que nos sorprende y nos seguirán impactando acontecimientos como este, porque en el fondo la mayoría de los humanos son personas que tienen la bondad arraigada en sus corazones.

¿Está nuestra especie tan mal como a veces pensamos…? Si apelamos a una fría conjetura de orden estadístico podemos ver que en términos de repetición, este tipo de actos son una rareza, ocurren muy pocas veces, aún en el país donde más incidencia hay de esos hechos, los americanos son trescientos millones de personas, y si lo comparamos con los ocho mil millones de habitantes que tiene el planeta nos daremos cuenta que la prevalencia de estos actos es mínima. Parece que nuestro mundo no esta tan mal como pudiera pensarse.

Otro asunto que me pregunto ante estos lamentables sucesos es por qué no ocurren más a menudo. En un mundo donde el bombardeo noticioso y mediático se centra en la exaltación de la violencia, donde los niños desde la más tierna edad son expuestos a la violencia de los videojuegos, y la violencia de las películas y las series. Pudiera ser normal esperar que acontecimientos como los ocurridos en esa escuela de Texas, debieran ser más frecuentes. Y sin embargo, y por fortuna, no es así. Hay algo dentro de nosotros que es capaz de darle prioridad a las buenas acciones.

En un libro que estoy leyendo del escritor español David del Rosario, “El libro que tu cerebro no quiere leer”, una obra que se ha constituido para mí en una auténtica revelación, el autor plantea una teoría que llama “el cerebro universal”, en este enlace pueden encontrar una versión digital.

Según lo planteado por Del Rosario, los seres humanos tenemos un cerebro que viene equipado con la predisposición a ponerse del lado del bien; nuestras tendencias innatas y naturales nos harían sentir empatía hacia la honradez y la bondad. Esto en sí es muy interesante puesto que en ese equipaje de origen con el que venimos al mundo traeríamos, sin que nosotros lo supiéramos, una protección capaz de resistir los modelados que recibimos en la vida y que pueden impulsarnos hacia el mal. Esa debe ser una de las razones por las que podemos vivir la mayor parte del tiempo con una paz bastante aceptable.

Uno de los experimentos reseñados por el autor los hicieron con bebés de nueve meses. El experimento consistía en exponer a los bebés ante dos marionetas, una hacía actos honestos y otra deshonestos. Al final se ponían las dos marionetas ante los niños y los bebés siempre preferían continuar jugando con la que había realizado actos honestos.

Un experimento sin duda interesante, porque revela por lo menos dos cosas, que el juicio moral, esto es, la capacidad de distinguir entre el bien y el mal, es anterior al modelado de la vida, por lo tanto puede ser muy fuerte. También porque le da fuerza a la tesis de que nuestra conducta natural es permanecer del lado del bien.

Soy de los que piensan que en la mayoría de los corazones habita un ser bondadoso, claro, que en un mundo tan grande siempre habrá la posibilidad de encontrar excepciones, gente que cede a las malas acciones. Pero si evaluamos nuestro día a día seguramente que podremos llegar a la conclusión que el odio no está ganando. Eso no significa que debamos descuidarnos; tampoco, que debamos dejar de insistir en llevar a las nuevas generaciones por el camino del bien.

Busy minding my own business I am surprised by the Twitter message, it speaks of a developing news story, a school shooting in the United States. Later the details of such a sad event would be revealed.

The first thing that strikes me is the age of the attacker, a boy of barely eighteen is capable of committing such an incomprehensible act: why someone can commit a mass murder like that, against defenseless minors, with a coldness that proves to be done by an intelligent and meticulous person...?

I do not dare to conjecture any conclusive statement, it is a subject in which any hypothesis that can be wielded can be perfectly refuted with arguments of great weight.

I do dare to think that Salvador Ramos, as the attacker was called, an apparently quite normal young man, with normal activities, like those of many young people of his age, may have nurtured such a great hatred as to produce an attack that was clearly useless, since there would be no way of obtaining any kind of benefit from it, neither political, nor economic, nor ideological. Perhaps his rage against the world was so great that he only thought of getting even, but I will not delve into this.

One thing that always happens to me when these unfortunate events occur is to ask myself why we are still surprised, why we are so repulsed by this kind of events. A feeling that is shared by many people in the world, it is enough to review the news portals of the world press, the feeling of sadness, of repudiation, of surprise before such a barbaric act is overwhelmingly majority.

I think we are surprised and will continue to be shocked by events like this, because deep down most humans are people who have goodness ingrained in their hearts.

Is our species as bad as we sometimes think...? If we appeal to a cold conjecture of statistical order we can see that in terms of repetition, such acts are a rarity, they occur very rarely, even in the country where there is more incidence of such events, Americans are three hundred million people, and if we compare it with the eight billion inhabitants of the planet we will realize that the prevalence of these acts is minimal. It seems that our world is not as bad as you might think.

Another thing I wonder about these unfortunate events is why they don't happen more often. In a world where the news and media bombardment is focused on the exaltation of violence, where children from the youngest age are exposed to the violence of video games, and the violence of movies and series. It might be normal to expect that events such as those that occurred in that Texas school should be more frequent. And yet, fortunately, this is not the case. There is something inside us that is capable of prioritizing good deeds.

In a book I am reading by the Spanish writer David del Rosario, "El libro que tu cerebro no quiere leer", a work that has become for me a real revelation, the author puts forward a theory he calls "the universal brain", in this link you can find a digital version.

According to Del Rosario, human beings have a brain that comes equipped with the predisposition to be on the side of good; our innate and natural tendencies would make us feel empathy towards honesty and kindness. This in itself is very interesting since in that baggage of origin with which we come into the world we would bring, unbeknownst to us, a protection capable of resisting the moldings we receive in life that can propel us towards evil. That must be one of the reasons why we can live most of the time with quite acceptable peace.

One of the experiments reviewed by the author was done with nine-month-old babies. The experiment consisted of exposing the babies to two puppets, one doing honest acts and the other dishonest. At the end, the two puppets were placed in front of the children and the babies always preferred to continue playing with the one that had performed honest acts.

An interesting experiment, no doubt, because it reveals at least two things, that moral judgment, that is, the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, is prior to the modeling of life, and therefore can be very strong. Also because it gives strength to the thesis that our natural behavior is to remain on the side of good.

I am one of those who think that in most hearts dwells a kind being, of course in such a big world there will always be the possibility of finding exceptions, people who give in to bad actions. But if we evaluate our day to day lives we can surely come to the conclusion that hatred is not winning. That does not mean that we should neglect; neither does it mean that we should stop insisting on leading the new generations on the path of good.
