The fascinating power of touch.

It's a pleasure to reconnect with the wonderful HIVE family, this time to reflect on a profoundly human topic, brought to us by damarysvibra@damarysvibra in her space "Integrales y en Expansión" (Integral and Expansive), entitled "Acaríciame" (Caress Me).

This time, the topic is approached from a broader perspective than the way we usually understand the word, focusing on Transactional Analysis, which recognizes the presence of positive, negative, and mixed strokes.

Positive strokes are an essential factor in our lives, as they not only provide good vibes but also give us the motivation to keep going.

During my forty-three years as a teacher, in my interactions with young people, I've come to understand that in addition to knowledge, they need support and affection. Often, when I see students overwhelmed by tension while answering questions or during a presentation, a smile or a simple gesture of approval can work wonders.

On the other hand, if we do the opposite—with gestures of disapproval and a sour demeanor—we can cause the student to become so tense that they may even go into shock, even if they possess the necessary knowledge.

In our relationships with others, we perceive that the affection we radiate is proportionally similar to that which we receive. When we are in the presence of people who show us affection, immediately, with lightning speed, the most varied expressions of affection spring forth from our being: in our gaze, our words, our gestures, and so on.

This understanding has served me well throughout my life, as I frequently encounter people who affectionately call me "Professor," "Félix," "Pacheco!" (Many people call me by my last name.)

Another way we show affection is through visits, especially when distance is involved. This often means that those who visit us have limited time, making it all the more special.

While all positive affection is comforting, I feel that affection within the family is even more precious. I confess that I have been blessed in this area and I thank God constantly. I speak in general terms, because if I went into detail, I would never finish.

As for mixed affection, we encounter it everywhere. Just today, while walking down the street, I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in a while, who, without hesitation, said to me, "You look great, but you've gotten so pale!" And I thought, of course, after retiring, I'm exposed to less sun.

As for negative affection, it's generally indiscreet and tactless. There's always the possibility of receiving it, although on many occasions it's not malicious. An example of this happened to me some time ago when a friend I hadn't seen in a long time came to visit. His first words were, "But why did you shave your head so short?!"

Since I knew beforehand that he was incapable of hurting my feelings, and that he instinctively blurted out the first thing that came to mind, I simply explained that I found it almost impossible to style my hair because gray hairs are so unruly.

There is another type of negative touch, characterized by its "subtle" harshness, which is like putting a finger on a wound to hurt it: "-if you had," or "if you hadn't," to allude to something that went wrong.

In general, it is vitally important to understand the impact of our touch on those around us. Therefore, we should emphasize positive touches to encourage good vibes, both in those who receive them and in ourselves when offering them. It is also essential to be tactful to avoid misunderstandings when expressing mixed or negative touches, verbally or nonverbally. Human sensitivity compels us to cultivate positive touches to contribute to increased well-being.

Thank you for reading. I would be very grateful for your comments.
