Sweating Over a Bowl of Pig’s Organ Soup on a Warm Singapore Night
How do you guys feel about having a bowl of warm soup on an already warm and humid night?
For some people, that probably sounds a little crazy LOL. But over here, I think it is perfectly normal. In many parts of Southeast Asia, we really don’t care too much about the weather when it comes to enjoying soup. If the soup is good, then the temperature outside is not going to stop us!
And tonight was definitely one of those occasions.
I was happily slurping my soup while slowly realizing that I was also sweating at the same time LOL. But you know what? I didn’t mind at all. Sometimes there is something strangely satisfying about drinking a hot, flavorful broth while the weather itself is already warm.
And if that doesn’t sound interesting enough, wait until you hear what kind of soup I ordered tonight.
It was Pig’s Organ Soup!
For people who are not familiar with this kind of dish, the name itself might sound a little intimidating. But in this part of the world, eating different parts of an animal is nothing unusual. There is this idea of making good use of what is available instead of only choosing the familiar cuts of meat.
And personally, I’m completely fine with it as long as everything is prepared properly.
Actually, one of my favorite parts of this soup is the pig’s intestine. I really like its chewy texture because it gives the dish a completely different eating experience compared to ordinary slices of pork. It takes a little more effort to chew, but that is exactly what makes it enjoyable for me.
There was also pork liver, slices of pork, and several meatballs swimming around in the broth. Basically, every time I moved my chopsticks around the bowl, I seemed to discover another piece of meat hiding underneath LOL.
For SGD 5.30, I thought the serving was quite generous. I also added a bowl of rice for SGD 0.50, bringing my entire dinner to only SGD 5.80. For something this filling, I would say that is a pretty good deal.
The broth itself was probably my favorite part.
It was surprisingly light and didn’t taste gamy at all. The flavor was savory with a slight sourness that kept the soup refreshing instead of becoming too heavy. I like soups like this because they don’t need to be overly rich to be flavorful. Sometimes a simple, clear broth is enough, especially when there are already so many different ingredients inside the bowl.
If there was one thing I would add, it would probably be some vegetables on the side. With a serving of leafy greens, I think this would feel like an even more complete meal.
But overall, I really enjoyed my dinner tonight.
Sure, I was sweating while eating it, but that certainly didn’t stop me from finishing my soup. And thankfully, I decided not to add any chili.
Otherwise, instead of simply sweating, I would probably be completely on fire LOL!
Bon appétit!
