Tonight, I decided to visit Aljunied for a simple dinner. If you're wondering whether there's anything special about this estate, well, I wouldn't say there's anything particularly exciting about it LOL.
It's just one of those regular urban neighborhoods in Singapore that I enjoy visiting once in a while. I actually like the vibe here because it's lively, casual, and there are plenty of food places that offer good meals at reasonable prices.
Sometimes, I don't really need to visit somewhere fancy to enjoy a good dinner. A simple hawker food center is already enough to make me happy!
Anyway, while wandering around the area near Aljunied MRT station, I found myself stopping by a food center where the Common Grill by COLLIN'S signage caught my attention.
Judging by their name, I assumed that grilled meat dishes were their specialty. I was initially interested in trying their mixed grill, but somehow, something else on their menu caught my attention.
It was their Hotplate Saba Fish with Rice!
I guess I was simply craving fish tonight that I ended up ordering it instead LOL.
The funny thing is that I only realized afterward that I also wanted to try their mixed grill. But since I had already placed my order, I didn't want to annoy the staff by suddenly changing it hahaha.
Well, there's always another opportunity to revisit this stall!
As for the dining environment, it's pretty much what you would expect from a typical Singapore hawker food center. The place was brightly lit, with plenty of customers enjoying their meals and conversations happening everywhere.
It wasn't exactly a quiet dining experience, but that's perfectly fine with me. I actually enjoy this kind of lively atmosphere because it makes the place feel more welcoming.
The seating arrangement was also fairly organized, so I had no complaints about the ambiance.
I waited approximately 15 minutes before my food was ready. I noticed that there were several orders ahead of mine, so I suppose the waiting time was reasonable.
And when my food finally arrived, I was quite impressed by its presentation!
The saba fish was served on a black hotplate with some leafy vegetables underneath it. It also came with a serving of white rice and a complimentary bowl of miso soup.
For SGD 7.50, I think that's already a pretty good deal!
Now, let's talk about the fish itself.
What impressed me the most was how perfectly cooked it was. The skin had a nice crispy texture, while the meat underneath remained juicy, soft, and tender.
I think the cooking time was precisely controlled because achieving this kind of balance isn't always easy, especially when grilling fish.
The saba also had that distinctive, intense seafood flavor that I really enjoy. Since saba is naturally a fatty fish, its flavor is noticeably richer compared to milder fish varieties like seabass or dory.
I personally appreciate this richness because it gives the dish more character.
The complimentary miso soup was another nice addition. It had a pleasant savory flavor, with some seaweed that made it even more enjoyable.
And of course, I finished the soup LOL.
I also like pouring a little soup over my rice because it adds moisture and flavor to an otherwise simple bowl of white rice.
Overall, I was really satisfied with tonight's dinner. The fish was cooked beautifully, the portion was satisfying, and the price was reasonable.
I definitely wouldn't mind returning to this stall to explore the other dishes on their menu. Hopefully, I'll finally get to try their mixed grill next time!
Sometimes, the simplest food adventures turn out to be the most enjoyable ones.
See you on my next food adventure!
